Thinking of learning how to play guitar starting in the summer and was wondering how much a starter kit would be? Obviously I'd want the very bottom end stuff as long as it's not completely crap being made by Fisher Price, jsut something for me to practice and learn to play on.

WOuld i be better off buying a used guitar off craigslist?

I want to know this also... Been practicing acoustic for some months and soon Ill want to step up (actually step down since electric is easier, but you get the point)

I was recommended an Epiphone Les Paul around 250-300?... Since they are very solid for their price (and I love the sound from what I heard), but since I dont know much (and I know nothing about amps) Id like some expert opinions... Oh, mostly for metal btw

How about a "I want to play guitar but don't want to pay too little" thread?

Obviously, you would have to factor in the cost of buying better equipment once you realize that that bargain bottom prices you paid got you some really crappy stuff.

Need to add in the time it would cost to list the crappy stuff on craigslist as well..

On a related note, it is possible that playing on crappy stuff will cause you to no longer pursue playing guitar which would save you the expense of buying something better.

this is probably mentioned in all of the threads linked above.

Yeah! That would work!

I'd suggest A '59 Les Paul Sunburst and maybe a nice vintage Plexi 100 to go with it :D

Of course, if anyone got a setup like that, I'd become their best friend instantly.

What about a "I don't want to play guitar, but just want to smash one into an amplifier Pete Townsend style" thread?

I paid a little over $325 for an Ibanez electric with a small amp and tuner.

Certainly not the best, but it works for me.

Here you go:

1964 Rickenbacker Rose Morris 1998
His first public guitar smashing, where he cracked the headstock of his guitar on a low ceiling, pulling it out and realizing the damage, he smashed the remainder in disgust, then turned to pick up his Rick 12 and continued playing. The next gig at the Railway, the crowd expected him to smash a guitar again.

Pete: (After cracking the headstock) I was expecting everybody to go, ?Wow, he?s broken his guitar, he?s broken his guitar,? but nobody did anything, which made me kind of angry in a way. And determined to get this precious event noticed by the audience. I proceeded to make a big thing of breaking the guitar. I bounced all over the stage with it and I threw the bits on the stage and I picked up my spare guitar and carried on as though I really had meant to do it.

You can find 1993 re-issues of this guitar for around $500-$800 :)

picked up an Ibanez RG4 EX1 off ebay and a second hand Marshall practice amp off Craigslist for $240 and $50. Got a 3 in 1 Tuner/Metronome/Chord Chart off Musicians Friend for 30-40.
