How much food do you think gets wasted at buffets like Golden Corral?

I was at Golden Corral, and I got the buffet as usual. My eyes were bigger than my stomach as I left about 25% of my food still on the plate and couldn't eat one more morsal.

Which made me wonder, how much food/bevarages do you think gets wasted at places like those on a daily basis?

I hate to imagine, but I think a LOT. Maybe employees get to take home some extras at the end of the day, but stuff that people leave on their plates gets thrown away. Now multiply food left on plate by how many people visit the establishment per day and it adds up big time.

I've wondered the same thing, but I usually leave around 35-45% of my food on the plate(everything looks soooo good!)

It's really sad that we waste so much food here. Im just as guilty as anyone else.

add into that the stuff that never ends up on your plate, stuff that sits in the buffet until close. Alot of that gets tossed too. Some places donate the food that has sat to long to homeless shelters, because the food is perfectly fine.

Not to mention the group of about 25 people that were in a section besids us as we ate. Why don't people chain their kids to the damn table or something? These damn hellions were running up and down the aisles bumping into people, screaming, yelling, and just being little assholes:|

Anyway, those kids dumped about a total of a half gallon of orange sherbet among them on the carpet not to mention the other countless bits of chicken, fish, and spaghetti left all over the place.

The girl that was bussing our table at the area said that she was quiting b/c $2.13 an hour + tips just ain't worth it for what she has to do.

For a dollar or so tip she would get, that really sucks working there. A friend who works at El Fenix gets $2.50 an hour plus tips, and for a 35 hour week he rakes in $400.

BTW, a lot of corporations WILL NOT allow donation of food to homeless shelters and such. (If you remember a while back, 2 employees of Jack in the Box or McDonalds got fired for giving about 300 leftover buns to a shelter) Basically I guess for liability reasons. I don't know how "poor people" would sue, but quite frankly I think regardless of liability a lot of shelters would welcome the donations. It's a shame that stupid f-ing lawyers have the power to sue someone whose trying to help.

Every place wastes food. Dunkin Donuts comes to mind, I have a few friends that work there and they throw about 2 trashbags of donuts/bagels/ets away.

Alpha, some local supermarkets do that. When the perishables are close to expiring or pass over the expiration date (by only like one day), they give them up for donation to a local homeless center.

LOL... reminds me of that Seinfeld episode...

REBECCA: (Interrupting) I know what you just thought! "They don't have homes! They don't have jobs! What do they need the top of a muffin for?! They're lucky to get the stumps!"

ELAINE: If the homeless don't like 'em, the homeless don't have to eat them, ok?

REBECCA: The homeless DON'T like them!

ELAINE: Fine!

REBECCA: We've never gotten so many complaints! Every 2 minutes - "Where's the top of this muffin?", "Who ate the rest of this?!"

ELAINE: We were just trying to help!

REBECCA: Why don't you just drop off some chicken skins and lobster shells!?

ELAINE: (Angry) I think I might!

:)

hehe, yea love that eps, funny because its so true:) I always dread eating the icky stumps.

anyhow the problem of buffet waste disturbing. I used to be guilty of just that, eyes were always bigger then my stomach:) Now i only take something if i really think i will eat it, and then i will only take a small portion. Taking a large chunk of something means its gonna get cold and nasty half way through, it is cheap low quality food anyhow, no point in pigging out.

oh yea, some people seem to have a greed thing..they want to get the most value for their money or something, so they pig out and eat until they feel sick:p I figure your paying to get fat and shorten your life..so you gain nothing by eating that much:p

never heard of golden corral. where is this place? Up here in norcal we only have hometown buffets(better then average tv dinner fare), some tomato place, and fresh choice. Personally i like the places with nice salads:p

oh yea, has anyone else eaten at the ballagio in las vegas? That was great:) They don't try get in your way by making stuff hard to eat. They have large prepeeled shrimp, crab with flesh exposed sou don't have to struggle... i wish all buffets were like that:) oh yea, nice hotels have pretty good buffets too, almost as good as the ballagio. course they are very expensive.

There's a restaurant here in Canada that charges a person $2 for not finishing all of their food (it is buffet so it's not like they serve you the portions). The $2 gets donated to local charity - I suppose a food bank. It's a vegan restaurant so that makes sense since their whole philosophy in life is not to consume for the sake of consuming, but to consume only what is necessary.

asian buffets will also get medieval on your ass if you waste their food:) Then again its harder to roll sushi etc then to make vats of mashed potatoes:p

johnnyjack,

yea, it was sweet tomatoes:) me and my lousy memory. Well fresh choice is for healthy light meals, something which it seems to do pretty well on. They use decent ingredients to make their stuff..no canned stuff u find at normal buffets. I'm not sure where you'd get a better healthier meal for only 2 bucks more though. At outback i could get a decent steak for almost twice as much.

yea as for hometown, i'd rather spend a couple bux less and get a mcdonalds meal:p mcgrilled chicken isn't half bad:p
