How much faster would a Raid 0 SATA setup be

with 2 Raptors versus a 120GB Maxtor 8MB drive. Would it make my system overall faster/more response and would it make games run faster?

Absolutely esp if you are refering to a single 8MB Maxtor cause I noticed a big difference (eso Vid encoding)) vs my single 120 WD SE

Read times are definitely noticeably faster--and I've heard that some people can reach amazing transfer speeds with RAID0 Raptors. But, as you probably know, RAID0 will cause you to lose your data if EITHER of the drives fail. In most cases, if the performance is that critical to you, RAID your identical drives, and then buy a "backup" or "storage" drive. With IDE storage so cheap, you could pick up a 120GB drive for $90 (watch the Hot Deals!) and give yourself that added security/space.

but won't that ide drive slow down your raid 0 setup? taht will be the bottleneck, right?

You wouldnt put the IDE Drive in the RAID, it would be seperate. I plan on doing a similar thing with a 200 GB WD SE storing all my important data, and the RAID 0 storing the OS and Applications.

I always heard putting the OS on RAID wasn't a good idea, and could lead you to a lot of grief in the future. I don't have much knowlege or experience with RAID configurations though.

I don't know why you wouldn't put your o/s on RAID, I always have. I run two 'sets' of paired drives, 1 for the o/s (maxtor D-8 40g) 1 for games (only 😀) (WD 8m 80g). I also used a dedicated (maxtor 40g) for the swapfile. Never have experienced a problemo 😉

If your box is properly powered, I would think you'd notice a faster 'response' of whatever your doing for sure. In fps terms it wouldn't show too much, but it would be better.

The difference is kinda huge!

When i moved from my 80GB SE as a main drive on my old rig... and went to two WDRaptors, i didn't notice that much of a difference it was a whole lot "zippy" though.

After using them for 2days i went to go back n transfer data of my old computer and it was soooo slow. Anything but RAID0 Raptors seems slow anymore. Hardly ever see a load screen for more than few milliseconds on some games with ratptors 🙂!

I use different 80Gb WD "SE" as a drive for my important files, mp3s, backup, DVD's ect stuff like word. And i have Games,OS, and anyoher app that would benefit from the RAID0 on the stripe.

BTW i have no PageFile, 1Gig is plenty for me. no need for a dedicated swap drive.

Get the Raptors, and use a large IDE drive to backup. It's been mentioned above, but i'd just like to reaffirm that this would be a killer setup.

what is the best method to set up that ide drive to back your stuff up? software?

Hell, they should just make a card with 1 Gig of rambus ram that will load up the OS from the get go. That likely sounds illogical to all hell but I can't help to wonder...

*still waits for an affordable solid state HDD solution.

Heh. I'd love to see one myself.

I had a 128 mb solid state drive running my BBS on my Commodore 128 way back when. It was basically a battery powered simm bank. Pretty cool. 😀
