I am going to upgrade my motherboard from an Intel d845wnl (using 256mb pc133 sdram) to a Asus P4S8X (using 256mb ddr333). I will reuse the cpu, a 1.5ghz Pentium4. How much faster will my computer be? Will it be very noticable? Or will it only be marginally faster? Also, what is the max thoughput of sdram? I know the max of ddr333 is 2.7gigs/sec, but what about the sdram? Thanks for your time in advance!

the theoretical output of your pc133 sdram is about 1.1 g./s

IF I were You I would get a faster Cpu (northwood) along with your upgrade. You should notice a pretty big difference then.

But you must remember its all relative. If you are going from a p2 400mhz to a p4 2ghz you it will be that much more noticable.

For high end processors, P4 and XP2000+ and above, DDR makes a big difference.

IMHO

I would get any Intel PE chipset board if buying now. Sis 648 did not sit too well with me. Asus P4PE-L is a super board. Only thing missing is AGP 8X.

DDR333 runs at 166MHz, so it is 33 MHz faster than PC133.

However DDR can send double the information per cycle.

SDRAM PC 133 = 1.1 GB
DDR 266 = 2.1 GB
DDR 333 = 2.7 GB
Dual DDR 266 = 4.2 GB
theoretical output
so DDR is about 1 GB faster then Sdram (2.1 - 1.1 = 1)
On a newer chip you will be able to tell the speed diff
I hope thats helps :)
