i bought a k7s5a/xp2400 combo special from Fry's over a year ago. the chip died recently.

max cpu in the k7s5a = xp2400.

i plan to buy either the k7vta3/xp2400+ or k7vme/2400+ combo. then next year i plan to upgrade to a xp3000 (barton, 333mhz) and to put the 2400+ in the k7s5a and give to my sister.

1) How much faster is a xp3000 than a xp2400?

2) Is it worth it to follow that upgrade path? or just buy the bang for the buck combo now (mobo + xp2700) and forget about the k7s5a?

k7vme/2400+ is free from microcenter. $90 - $100 if u use their credit card.

k7vta3/2400 at fry's is $50 or less.

i want to keep costs down and will reuse my pc2100 ram

will the a64 2600+ combo accept pc2100 ram?

If you want to keep your pc2100 RAM, then your whole system will be running at 133mhz, rather than the 150 or 166 that the upgraded mobo/cpu will be able to run.
For the sake of a 256MB stick of DDR, it might be worth upgrading this as well.
