How much electricity does a TV use compared to a computer + monitor?

I'm thinking about putting a TV card in a PIII 550 system (250w PS) that has a 20" monitor and ditching this 1982 20" or so TV thats killer on the eyes. 😛

TV says 120V, 60hz, 95 watts.

Ahhh... but recording TV on a computer rules! Go for it and be the envy of Tivo owners because you can share your shows with your friends!

$50 for good TV Card w/ recording capabilities.

$200+ for making it even worthwhile to buying a TV. Theres already a bigger TV downstairs, this is just for my room. Space is limited.

your computer will draw more than that. i think my monitor draws something like 75... and when you consider a fast P4 is dumping 60-70 watts of heat alone (that's just the wasted energy), and the other components are wasting energy on heat in addition to their used energy, i wouldn't be surprised if a well equipped system draws 150-200 watts or more.

Not sure about how much power the monitor would draw, but I hooked up a current meter to the AC input of my P3 500 (Katamai) machine. Once it got into windows, it leveled out at ~100Watts (Just under 1A current draw @ ~119VAC). With a TV tuner card in action, I'd expect to tak ~ 20W onto that.

Bottom line...a new TV would be cheap to buy and WAY cheaper to run

EDIT: out of curiousity, I decided to measure. My 21in Monitor pulls ~120W with a browser window with a bright background maximized, ~90W with only dark desktop showing
