It looks to be in Very Fine condition. It looks slightly circulated, though.

BTW, is it actually gold or did it get strangely colored by the scanner?

Yep, that's a Liberty Head $20. First, DO NOT CLEAN, POLISH or otherwise mess with the coin.

The 1895 is a fairly common date for these coins. It's impossible to tell for sure from a scan, but I think it might be in AU condition. Probably worth about $350-$380. Most of the value is in the gold content.

Melt it and sell off the gold! :p

You could always take the Goldmember route with the melted remains... :D

Common date $20 Liberty head or Lib as known to collectors.

Contains slightly less than 1 Oz Troy pure gold (.9675), is 21.6 Karats, 24K being pure and brings the current price of gold plus about $90 premium as a rule of thumb. About $410 today as last I saw gold it was $320 per troy oz.

Condition is everything as to the value of a coin. Your coin is definately circulated (look for wear on high spots such as eagles head and wing tips. Libs hair with a loop. Gold coins are harder to grade accurately than silver) but still an nice example for a type set. Looks in the grading range of 50-55 to me (Im a hard grader) from the photo on a scale of 70 being perfect and 60 being just uncirculated. Lots of mint luster left but again hard from a scan. Handle carefully and by edges only! Wrap in tissue until you can get a safe holder.

Actually, I had a teacher that had a pendant for his necklace made out of a silver dollar. His friend got a silver dollar from the teachers birthyear and made it into the Batman insignia (since he's got a Batman tatoo). It was pretty cool...

Actually worth about $90 more UNMELTED. No assay work needed to prove Karat value and some collector value thrown in as well.

Yeah, not quite uncirculated.

On the obverse side:
wear from the top of the head to the word "Liberty"
nick on the neck
other various small scratches on the surface

reverse side:
pretty big scratch on the shield
various dents, most notably around the "In God we trust" area
dings around the outer edge

It's still in pretty nice shape though! Cool! :)
