How much does the power supply really consume?

Hello,

I was wondering about my 300W power supply. Does it constantly consume 300W of power while it is on, or does the computer only use as much as it needs? I have found conflicting answers while digging up articles via Google. While electric rates are increasing with this dreaded heat wave, I thought maybe I could save a few bucks by getting a weaker power supply.

300w is the max in can consume, it will use only as much power(+ a little more, some energy is given off in heat) as your componts consume.
