There is either a one time fee or you have to pay the remainder of the contract/lease.

Read your contract or call your property management and ask them.

It depends on the contract. They are all different. Typically (YMMV) it's one-month's rent plus the forfeiture of your deposit, if any. ALSO, most places will report you to the credit bureaus as well.

Unless you're buying a house and wont' need good rental history, don't do it unless you just don't give a sh1t about your rental history.

Trust me, even moving to another state, your rental history will follow you.

no the thing is i haven't signed a lease or moved in yet... i was just wondering what it takes to get out of a contract

i need to be up north for three months or so (over this summer), my friend is getting a single room apartment since he is literally becoming homelss up there, but probably moving back down with me after three months. I was wondering how much it costs to get out

Unfortunately, not many regular apartment complexes have 3-month or short term leases. ANd if they do, the rent is astronomical. :Q IMO, he should rent a furnished room. Breaking a lease is BAD and it WILL follow him around. Doesn't sound like all that big of a deal until he is looking for an apartment somewhere and nobody will lease to him, or won't lease unless he pays first and last month up front, with a signed lease for forfeiture of it all if he breaks the lease.

If yoiu know that you will be leaving in a few months, either have an escape clause in the lease or ensure that you can leave without a penalty.

Best case is that you will lose the security deposit and/or the last month rent.

Yeah, i was aware that apartments don't have 3-month or short term leases... we talked about just renting a room but if i go up there, where would i be staying?
he has a job, he just has to leave where he is currently staying (at his female friend's place)
i wouldn't want to mess up his credit or anything, i was just wondering if there are any other good options... any ideas?
