I think my transmission in my new car is leaking fluid. The transmission is ok but I gotta get this taken care of soon. It's not supposed to leak :shocked: Does anyone know how much it will cost to replace the gasket? Car is a 98 Ford Explorer XLT.

A couple of months ago I spent an insane amount getting replacement clutch kit, shifter and transmission (5-speed, not auto) in my truck. I was ready to shoot the truck when I found some oil dripping from the transmission case recently, and almost had a heart attack when I thought about MORE transmission trouble. I took it back to the shop, and the issue actually had nothing to do with the transmission - a gasket near the top of the engine was leaking oil down the back of the engine. The way it dripped down looked like I was leaking fluid from the transmission gasket, but it was really a minor repair.

I have an honest mechanic, so I got out of there for $60 for the new gasket's installation and a confirmation that the transmission was okay. Maybe you have somthing similar going on?

Pan gasket and filter is around $30. Trans fluid is going to be about 6-9 quarts so about $20. You doing it yourself and removing about 20 pan gasket bolts FREE.
So about $50 if you do it yourself.
Some one else doing it figure anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours labor at around $75 each hour.
Its not hard to do. Just removal of bolts, drain fluid, remove and replace filter, put new gasket back on, tighten bolts, fill back up with 5 quarts of fluid. Start car put foot on brake and go through the gears and recheck level and fill if needed till full.

If it is a rubber line leaking even easier.

funboy- add the fact that it is the messyest job in the world if you don't drain it just right.
I'm guessing the OP is not the DIY type for this scale of job.

Shouldn't cost more than $100
call around and ask for a transmission filter change. Make sure they include a new gasket with the job
