How much does it cost to get an A/C installed in a car?

I just came across a used car that's in really good condition with low mileage and a great price (carfax shows its clean)..only pitfall is it has no A/C. If getting an A/C installed doesn't cost *that* much I may go for it (i'd rather get it installed at the dealer as their warranties are far better than mom-and-pop stores, or those crappy chains like R&S Strauss..).

BTW, the car is a '98 Civic HX..

AT least one grand.
Yep, probably between $1500 and $2000.

Best to scour the salvage yards and find the accessory brackets, hoses, radiator, condensor, compressor, AC climate control panel, etc. and do it yourself. Good luck!

Didn't Honda charge $1,300 or so for this option? I don't think I would invest $2,000 in the A/C - unless you desired to keep the car for a long, long time. You'll never get the that money back out of the car if you decide to sell it.

I just re-read your thread. Initially, I thought you had purchased this vehicle, but after re-reading it, I realized you were just looking at the vehicle. There's plenty of other cars out there, so I'd keep looking if I were you. Not having the A/C probably only dropped the value of the car by $300 - however, getting new A/C installed would be much more.

mine was about $1300 installed by the dealer when i bought a new truck (that didn't have a factory-installed one).

3rd party installers weren't that much cheaper and the warranty was only 1 year (versus 3 years for the dealer install).

it shouldn't be too hard to find a good used vehicle WITH A/C.

About $1,000 for the A/C kit from Honda plus installation.

(Installation about 6 to 9 hours flat rate at a Honda dealership)
