I mean maybe a decent machine on a T1 or something at a ISP...I hope you know what I mean. Like how Anand has his Forum servers at the ISP office, I want to get a decent machine in one with a T1 or SDSL or something. How much do you think it would cost?

thats just for the T1. Tack another $2000 if you want a halfway decent server. Check out Dell's Poweredge 2400 series.

Yeah, T1 is more for business rather than home/personal use. Go for cable modem or DSL if you're looking for a fast connection.

Uhh..no. They don't just let anyone come in and hook computers up to their network.

Why do you want a dedicated server anyway? It'd cost roughly $1K for a T-1 alone...

hmm, depends also on what chunk of a trunk your using. I betcha a yahoo size connection, or like microsoft needs, costs alot more per month.

But urban, a t1 to the house oughta be cheaper, and depending on what your hosting, less hassel.

btw hosting for what? a site? or a bunch of stuff?

Why not just get SDSL to your home? That'd be a whoooole lot cheaper than a T1. And dedicated servers are usually for running webservers, I'd be surprised if you could find a company that'd monitor your dedicated CS server. :p

Most people who have really fast connections for game servers either are sysadmins at universities or large companies that just have the bandwidth. But you could hook yourself up with some nice SDSL and run a damn fine 12 player CS server.

Ripped From http://www.hhole.com/faq.html

<< Tell me blah about the Server...
The server is currently a P3-500 with 256mb RAM running Linux. It's located in San Jose, CA at a secure facility called Above.Net which provides multiple redundant OC48 connections, of which this box gets a 100mbps slice. Though it never uses more than ~400kbps at peak times, the combination of big pipe and decent box usually equals excellent ping for anyone on the west coast or connected via @home. I often get 30ms from Vancouver to San Jose, which isn't bad for a round trip of a few thousand kilometers.

The whole thing is financed by porn.

Seriously.
>>

SEE! (cs.hhole.com:27015) He has his box at a ISP.

Do you guys even know what he is asking?!
UrbanTech, go to http://webservices.cnet.com/html/aisles/Dedicated_Servers.asp for more info, They have a lot of a hosts listed there. You might find one that suits your needs.
Basically you're looking at $199/month for a dedicated server on a 155mbps line and 20GB of transfer per month maximum. This is probably the lowest you'll find. You'll either have to buy a server (cobalt raq most likely ~$1,000) from them or set up one of your computers at their location. You can use it for a CS server, webhosting server..what you like, based on your needs.

<< Uhh..no. They don't just let anyone come in and hook computers up to their network. >>

That's called co-location. and Yes, they do let you do that, for a cost.

Cheapest T1 I've seen is $1250 a month. I've heard rumors of $900 T1 lines, but I've also heard rumors of bigfoot and I dont believe that one either.

Get yourself a business class DSL line. It will run 200-300 per month, and give you similar preformance. I had a business class gold (768/768) package from Verizon. I could put up a 14 person CS game fine. If I went to platinum, I could probably do a full 20.

KameLeon beat me to it. You usually pay by the number of rack units you're using, and have a certain amount of transfer included in that price. Beyond that you'll pay by the GB.

I know exactly what he's asking. If it was me doing it, I certainly wouldn't want a dedicated co-location server. I'd want SDSL. You can get 384/384 SDSL for less than $150/month usually. That webpage said he only uses 400kb at PEAK times...and he probably runs an 18-player server, right? Then you run the server yourself, and although it may be a hassle, for most of the people here it'd be a rush. ;)

Webhosts hosting your dedicated server WILL NOT allow you to run a CS server I bet, unless you are willing to pay thousands for bandwidth.

Warpo is correct, make sure that you can send UDP, as opposed to TCP. Games like diablo and CS transmit info by UDP (I'm pretty much sure of that).

Gregulator, I think Windows 2000 has a built in webserver. Although I'm not sure..
You could install unix, and run Apache too. Or There are many others out there for windows platform..
