I have a 17 inch laptop and I need it fix.

I need to change the hinge and have my fans and heatsink clean out.

How much would that cost?

Nothing, I do it myself if it needs repaired.

You will pay out the azz if you take it to a shop or the Geek Squad. You might be able to find someone trustworthy on the forum if you can't do it yourself. Post the model number if you don't mind, I'll see if I can look up the hinge.

Nothing...I can do all that sort of stuff myself...which is a good thing because I have 8 PC's in my home.

If you stick it in the microwave for 30seconds it will evaporate all the dust and make magic smoke

5?? That's a little excessive, isn't it. I think 4 will be more than enough.

He has not posted the model number yet so who really knows, besides if he needs to change the filter it will likely take all 5.

Well that's true. I'll wait for the model number. If it's one of the "lite" veggie oil laptops...i'm calling you out Alistar7.

No answer, lappy must have sprung a huge leak and blew the entire rack & pinion assembly.

Just about $148.41.

That's a really accurate number.

I've had this problem before, how are you supposed to fix it?

you put the allen wrench and tighten with an 8-3/4 inch impact socket screw to 55.75 psi and then put on some headlight fluid and you're gold

Parts and labor is probably around $200.

For $200 more you can buy a brand new laptop ($399 price should end today).

$399 with no rebates:
Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2310 1.46 GHz
1GB DDR2 Memory
120GB Serial ATA Hard Drive
Double Layer DVD+/-RW Drive w/ LightScribe
802.11 B/G Wireless
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
15.4" WXGA LCD with Ultrabright technology (1280 x 800)
Windows Vista Home Premium

Get the service manual and find the parts on eBay. If it's a recent model laptop, replacement hinges should be easy to find and cheap in price. Cleaning out the heatsink is trivial. Going on a guess for cost of parts, I'd say no more than $50 plus an hour or two of your time.

Do it yourself, laptops aren't as complicated as you may think.

The job can be done with a good electronics driver set, an air duster, and contacting the manufacturer's parts department for a replacement hinge. Those kinds of parts aren't usually FRUs so they might not be able to sell you just a hinge, they might try to sell you the whole screen assembly, in which case going on eBay and buying a "For Parts" model of the laptop would be cheaper.
