Well.. my housemates friends always comes over to do laundry. I never thought anything of it until my girlfriend was surprised to hear that. She asked if I make them pay. I was very questioned...

so..

Does Laundry (Washing / Drying ) eat up a lot of energy? If so, how much?

My dad seemd to have it figured out at about $0.50/load for electricity and water. He made sure to remind me all the time, too.

Electric or gas dryer? Gas or electric hot water? Don't forget wear & tear on the equipment. It would piss me off if I went to wash clothes and the damn thing quit working on me. The first thing that would flash through my mind, is the free-loaders ambling off with arm loads of clean clothes, while I'm stuck with a pile of dirty laundry and a broken machine to fix. :| I don't think even fifty cents per load would be enough compensation if that occurred.
