In very very rough numbers... does anyone have a feel of how much it costs to build a ~2500 sq ft house?

Edit: I've been watching the local planning commission on channel 3, it's interesting how people get really pissed off when people want to build big houses near them.

It depends on where you live. Location dictates construction costs.

EDIT: if you live in L.A., it'll probably cost several hundred thousand dollars.

Depending on the area of the country it will range from $80-150 per square foot.

Is it much cheaper to add a second story to an existing house? Or does that just get into too many variables?

If the foundation can handle it and the walls are built strong enough to support then it would be an option. It would be a real mess to live in a house that you are adding a second story to though. You also would have to remodel the first floor to include a new staircase, etc. Plumbing/wiring/mechanicals running through the first floor to the second make things harder along with needing upgrades to your current mechanicals to support the extra load.

Seriously, ATOT is not the place to get feedback on this question. Talk to a contractor.
