How much does IOS version matter?

Hey guys,

I am looking to make my own cisco lab off of ebay and they have a nice set for 440 that includes 3 2501s and 1924 switch software but it only has the 11 version of IOS. Now you can get versions with the 12.2 and more memory. What do i really need for the lab. I plan on getting my CCNP too. Thanks...

12.0 and up should be alright.

12.1 or 2 would be ideal for all the QoS. But 12.0 will do. Heck 11.3 would probably be ok. I have 12.0 running on my 2500s in my lab. You can get ram and flash for cheap if you look. Just get IP ios (don't really need all the other stuff)

To be honest, neither. These guys are packaging them up as a slick package, but you can buy a 2501 on ebay for < $50 and the books aren't THAT expensive. I'd see what they included in their bundle and see what it would cost you to buy them individually.

The one for $1200 is a total rip-off, IMHO. Heck, I see a CCNA/P study kit on ebay that will likely go for under $150 that has two 2501's and a switch (here). Pick up another router and a couple more cables and you'll have the hardware you need for < $200.

The caveat is, of course, IOS. Upgrading is PRICEY. In honesty, however, most of these 2501's have passed through a LOT of hands and I doubt if most of their software code is legit, anyhow.

Lastly - Don't forget ethernet transcievers. 2500 series generally come with 10baseT AUI ports that need a transciever to get to 10BaseT. You can get 'em cheap on ebay or the local used computer shop, just don't plan on buying them at Radio Shack or Circuit City!
