From Edmunds, for a 2001 GTS coupe (RT/10 droptop is about $5K cheaper):

Invoice: $65,555

MSRP: $72,225

Destination Fee $775

Notable options are:

Stripes - Dual Painted - $3,000(!)

ACR Competition Group (performance package) - $10,000

Comfort Group (requires ACR group, includes A/C, stereo to make it a little comfier on the road) - $1,100

Connolly Leather Package (a bargain relative to the stripes) - $750

If you're paying $74k for a car, I don't think that you are gonna be worried about $3,000 for some stripes

The gas-guzzler tax is calculated based on the manufacturer's Corporate Average Fuel Economy ("CAFE") (i.e., the average fuel economy of all the cars they sell under the marque), and Dodge sells a whole lot of Neons for every Viper. I don't know for a fact but I believe you would not pay gas-guzzler tax on this, unlike, say, a Porsche or Ferrari.

Last I heard gas-guzzler was pretty low anyway. I think its something like $50 per mpg less than 18 (or so) mpg that the car gets. Ie, if a viper gets 12 mpg, you pay a pathetic $300.

Also You will have to order it and wait 6-12 months. I remember back in 93-94 the dodge store I worked at was getting 15-20K over MSRP! And ADD 6K for AC!!

NFS4: I'm guessing Dodge is taking good advantage of the fact that the buyers wouldn't care about paying $3k when they are already paying $74k.

If I was buying a Viper I wouldn't pay extra $3k for the stripes. You buy something for what it's worth. A Viper is worth $74k..the feelings you get from driving that car is well worth the price. The stripes, on the other hand, are not. They are merely white lines that run along the top of the car.

is it just $300 for the viper's gas tax?

it just seems like a low figure when you consider how much money our government wastes, but of course i could be wrong.

No that was just my guess on how gas guzzling works, I'm not sure what it would be on the viper and I don't know if the guzzler tax works like that anymore.

As I said above, I believe the gas-guzzler tax is based on the average fuel economy for the manufacturer's entire fleet, so i doubt the Viper requires any at all.
