How much does a new muffler cost?

I think I need a new one on my 525.
Can I take it anywhere, or do I have to go to the dealer and pay through the nose?
 
I've seen "factory replacement mufflers" for $19.95..I wouldn't trust those, though..

My muffler was $140 installed ($232.20 total with custom 2.25" catback and muffler) -- I probably paid too much, but at least it doesn't sound like a cheap fart can 🙂
 
You don't have to take it to the dealer and should stay away from the chain stores like Midas. Find a few independent muffler shops and get some estimates. Estimates are free and you get to find out just what they are offering for the price.
 
I just got an estimate from Speedy Muffler for $250 for a replacement exhaust from the cat back. Not a custom exhaust, just an OEM replacement. My exhaust has a rattle, but I can live with it, so I'm not going to replace it.
