How much do you try to complete in a game?

Just curious, I just got super mario galaxy and noticed that I can either skimp by or do a ton like secret stars and such... I think I'll complete every star that is shown, and any i happen to stumble across while playing. I don't plan on searching levels after I completed the X/X stars shown though (except for the comets, I like those).

i have to finish every game i buy...no cheating, no glitching or anything, just go through the whole thing. and than pop in the next game 🙂

Depends on the game, and whether or not there are other games vying for my immediate attention, but I try to do as much as possible. For some games "beating" them once is enough.

This for me too.

I'm mostly a consumer of games, so many that I'm not completely enthralled with I just blow through to say I beat it, but see very little of the extras. Call of Duty and most FPS games in fact are like this. Others, like Fallout 3, I will try to do everything there is to do because the game is just plain fun. Burnout Paradise and some RPGs are like this.
For the most part though, I'm the person who buys, beats and sells or moves onto the next before finishing the first. I think that's a bad thing, but monotony of one game is also bad. Unless it's Fallout 3.

I play games until I'm bored with them, no more and no less. The only games that have kept me entertained until I got 100% completion and beyond are Castlevania:SOTN and super mario world.. at least that's all I can think of off the top of my head..

edit: Oh yea, for a while I tried to get 100% of Super Mario Galaxy, but then mario kart wii came out and I lost focus.

It all depends on the game, like many have already stated.

If I find a game entertaining and enjoyable I will probably finish it, and maybe even try to get as many acheivments as possible.

When I was a young lad I had more time than money, so I'd get a game or 2 a year and do everything possible with them.

Now the tides have turned, and I just consume games. Play it until I'm bored or beat it with minimal effort and move on.

8-10 hours then im done with a game in single player. multiplayer i can keep playing for a bit longer... i get bored and have no desire to play. recently i have tried to go to my back log of games and beat them.

Like other have said it depends on the game. I've got a young kid, wife, job, life so I don't have unlimited time. So after 30 hours on GTA4 and only being 55% done with the game I said to heck with it. Now I'm working on Fallout 3 and hope the game NEVER ends.

Well, as many have said it depends on the game, but for me it also depends on the platform somewhat. For console games, I pretty much turn and burn (complete the SP campaign and anything else that might strike my fancy). This makes it easy to get maximum resale at Game Crazy and pick up another game. On the other hand, PC games tend to have more limited resale/used options and often have the option to download and play free user made content. HL2, Far Cry, and Crysis are examples of this. All of these games had a decent amount of user made content that was actually really high quality (Minerva:Metastasis for HL2 comes to mind), which gave these games considerable longevity beyond their out of the box SP or MP.

For an FPS I beat the storyline. Any side things like those trophies or achievements in valve I don't care for.
In WoW I tried to do everything, but it was impossible.
In a Racing game I try to get Gold or 1st in everything (or close to 100%) sometimes this proves extremely challenging though and I may give up.
Other general games is pretty much about beating the story line

I don't bother with the optional stuff unless the game is really good ("classic" good) or if completing them makes later stages easier (common in RPGs). often I don't complete the game at all... I try to not get tied down with one game as I have many in my queue and little time to play them.
