How much do you tip your barber/stylist?

I've been going to the same barber for six years, and he's the only one who works in his shop. There aren't any other employees. A haircut there costs $15, and I usually give him a 20 and ask for $2 back.

I think 20% is plenty for a one-man operation, especially considering he doesn't make an hourly wage - he just takes in whatever he makes.

Fair? Cheap?

I don't tip at all, but I pay $11 in the first place for a ~10 minute mediocre haircut.

$5 to the same guy each time. He appreciates it and goes out of his way to accomodate me whenever I need a cut.

i so hate the tipping culture in the states... decidedly 19th century
actually thats one of the things i like best about Switzerland. no one expects tips - not waiters, not cabbies, ... you only tip people when they really go out of the way to do something special. if you pay them to do their job, then that should be in the asking price already....

a friend of mine i know cuts my hair... she's been cutting it since she went to beuty school and just has me come to the high end salon she works at now. rather then charge me the $25 fee that the salon normally charges for men's hair cuts, i just give her $20 to the pocket.

why? - because even though she cuts my hair in 20 minutes or so, its still 20 minutes of time that she takes away from her normal clients where should could be making good money (the average woman at this salon spends $100-250 on a hair cut/style/color/highlight) - so i dont have a problem giving her 20 bux

I only tip if they do a good job, and I liked the conversation. When I do it's usually $2 on a $12 cut.
