how much do you tip? POLL Inside!

i've noticed that my friends and i differ when it comes to tipping. i esp. see this when its males and females.
my friend who waited tables told me its generally twice tax ...but that varies from area to area (in nyc that would come out to 8.6*2 or 17%)...or about 15%. so what do you guys think is the right amount for tipping?

is this percentage the same for cab rides, tips for bartender after ordering drinks, and other things?

i just remembered that some places i've gone to tack on 18% gratuities fee automatically...is that a hint?

tips for bartenders are also a lil subjective. i mean a $2-3 tip is a bit much for a $7-9 drink, but $1 seems a bit too small

I tip according to service. There have been plenty of jerks who don't get squat from me - slow service I can tolerate, but when they give you attitude they lose their tip. I hate it when you say "it's been 45 minutes, can I have an update on my food?" and they respond with that impudent tone. I've tipped fast, friendly waiters up to 25% (depending on restaurant as well).

One time I went in Chi Chi's and ordered a small thing of chili con queso for ~$1.89ish and then realized I had to leave right away, but I left a $3 tip anyway, so that was like almost 160% that time.

"twice the tax" is really just a convenience in calculating thing, not a "rule of thumb" thing. I do twice the tax to keep it simple.

I worked in the rest biz for over 20yrs (part or full time) and... To me, it is all about attitude.

I can get crap service from someone who tries hard, gives a damn and is friendly and leave 20-25%
I can get excellent service from someone who has a pr!ck attitude and leave 15%
Bad service with a bad attitude gets a tip of $1.00... no matter what the bill is, they get $1.00

🙂

Poor service = 0-10% (depending on how poor)

Acceptable service = 15-20% (everything is just fine. I don't give the waiter a second thought)

Exceptional service = 20-30% (the waiter stands above the crowd and surprises and impresses me)

The number of guests and the amount of the bill does nothing to affect how much I tip.

Sounds like my take on it also.

Typically 20% on the bill - tax if the service is reasonably good. If they act like a d!ck like this one waiter on friday (asked us 10 times if our water was fine, hinting at the wine menu, and when we refused he never refilled our water) we gave him like a dollar tip

If its lunch or breakfeast at a decent place I give 10-15%. For dinner at a nice place i give 15% and for dinner at a really nice place 20%.
