how much do you tip hotel maids?

just wondering how much to tip hotel cleaning maids who clean up your room every morning? $1? $5?

If you mean leaving money there, then hell no. I already paid part of their wage, and most rooms I've ever stayed in wouldn't deserve a tip anyway.

Always tip the maids...because if you don't, they will do horrible things to your toothbrush, bath towels, bed sheets, etc. when you are not there. 3-5 bucks/night is usually fine. If they have sex with you...then give a little more.

my grandma works as a maid and she gets annoyed when people leave a PENNY on the table.

generally though i see tipping go on in only the expensive hotels - she works at a hotel nikko, which is catered mostly to japanese guests methinks. when i was in thailand i tipped the maids like two bucks a day but i was staying in four star hotels. *shrug*

a penny? i think thats more carelessness of the tenant than a tip

depends on how long you're staying. If its for 4 or more days or so, its a great idea and you can ask for extra coffees or whatever and they'll take care of you. I'm not sure theyd do horrible things if you don't but they'd do good things if you do.

i work at a hotel and can tell you that if your staying for multiple nights, be sure to tip the maid, they'll appreciate it and you'll get treated a lot better

i'm a bellman, so this is not a shameless plug for maids, but i as a bellman also expect to be tipped when i carry your 9 heavy ass bags up the stairs and to your room for you

I confess, I have never tipped a maid, unless I asked her to do something out of the norm for me, like bring extra towels or blankets. I am pleased to find out now how wrong I have been, and I shall from this day forward tip the maids. Bellman, I always tipped you. Thanks for the reminder.

Let me give you some wise words of advice:

Tip Often
Tip Well
Tips are money and also manners.

Yes, yes, I know this goes against the grain of all you cheapskates out there, but let me fill you in on something, IT COMES BACK TO YOU.

Everyone knows someone, and everyone knows someone that can help you. Especially in the tight knit community that is people who work for tips.

Consider they will help you out, they'll keep your sheets nice and clean, your pillows fluffy, your soaps will be replenished, etc. And as well, your problems will be well taken care of.

Also consider, the people who work for tips aren't making a lot of money. And they generally work HARD.

Let me give you an example, the tipping capital of the US, Las Vegas.

If you've been to Las Vegas, you know that you tip EVERYONE there. And if you don't tip, word will get around quick, and you won't get any breaks whatsoever. Tip well, and you'll have a much better time.

You tip the person who brings your drinks, you'll get better tables. You tip your maid, your room will be nice, clean and safe. You tip the dealer, I guarantee even if you're not a high roller you'll get treated like one. Once I went to see Penn and Teller at Ballys, tipped the girl who brought me my drink twice what the drink cost, and ended up in a front row seat though I'd only bought one pretty far away. No one else was sitting there tonight, she said, and I had a wonderful time. (My seat = $20, front row =$90, tip cost $10 ... you do the math).

Oh well, YMMV but my mantra has always been "Generosity pays in kind".
