How much do you tip at Benihanna?

Ate there last night and when the check came I started to wonder if I was supposed to leave the chef a seperate tip. I usually leave 15% everywhere else but if the chef and server are splitting the tip then that would be kinda small relative to the bill. What do you think??

we just tip the usual 15%...

That $20 for the little itty bitty "steak" pays for the chef's salary...You are basically paying for the show and I see no reason why you should put an extra tip..

I am actually always satisfied with the portions. I got the land & sea : soup, salad, bowl of fried rice, tempura onions, zuchinni & mushrooms, scallops & steak. I was stuffed.

I'm thinking of going there tomorrow for the first time. Is the food good and the "show" entertaining?

MmMMMmMMmmm tempura onions... I'm going to try that tonight.

Yes but you paid an arm and a leg for that.

For dinner, $20 will buy you a cup of soup, a 6"x1"x.25" "filet mignon", 6 pieces of baby shrimp, a handful of veggies, and rice. Now i'm not that big of a guy 5'11, 140 pounds, and I had subway for lunch, but that still left me hungry

It all depends on the chef. One time i got a hispanic one and it wasn't all that exciting (i'm not saying all hispanic chefs at benihanna are bad) but and other times it was alright. You'll probably be uber amazed the first time you go there, but after that, it gets kind of boring.

The food is alright, if not for the small portions and the price. $2.95 extra for a bowl fried rice my a$$

I love the food, it tases so good straight off the grill. The show does depend on the chef. Most plates are in the $teens to low 20's, lobster tail, steak and shrimp is around $29.

I had the same experience. There have been times that I go there and we get the hispanic chef, he is a nice guy but he just cooked the food, didn't put on the kind of show the other chefs did. I would hear other people at their tables clapping and going on about all the tricks their chef was doing. Ours was very low key.

At most Japanese steak houses, the tip is shared between the chef and the cook. So tip accordingly.

And if you are bitching about the prices, the food and experience are obviously not worth it to you. Why bother going?

Remember this: Per square foot used, a Japanese steak house makes the worst use of space (those grills take up a HUGE amount of space) AND they turn around customers slower than any other restaurant style. Of course it's going to be more expensive. You're paying for the increased overhead per customer cost.

Benihanna is nice, but if you become a fan of the food and experience, you'll quickly find that some locally owned Japanese steak houses in many cities offer better food and service.

otherwise known as onion rings. duuhhh.

put a little ketchup on it and it's good to go.

Been there a few times, it's pretty cool if you have a good chef that knows a lot of great tricks. Sometimes you've gotta wonder if they've ever cut a finger off.

just skin it, debone it and serve it. 🙂

The one and only time I went, it was great. Its probally one of those things you gotta do once in your life, then not do it again.
