How much do you tip at a Buffet?

Since the people are providing me a service by refilling my drinks and removing my plates, I feel they should be tipped the same as other places, usually 18%, rounded up to the nearest dollar.

How much do you usually tip these people?

10% is the buffet standard so usually 20%+

Whenever I eat somewhere and my tab is $10, I'll leave a $3-5 tip, what's an extra buck or two.

Depends on the buffet. If I get my own drinks, I tip NOTHING.

If they bring/refill drinks, usually 10-15%

Since I have to get my own food...IMO, they don't earn as high a tip as in a conventional restaurant.

I would depend on the service level. Soup Plantation where you basically do everything yourself and they just bus your plates we would leave a couple of dollars. When or children where smaller and the table would look like a disaster zone after we left it would be $5. Sometimes the challenge is making sure you half cash in your wallet to do this since you pay everything up front. However at Sunday Brunch I would usually do about 10% since they are bringing drinks etc however you have to get your own food.

Do you take away each dirty plate?

Do you clean up the table after you're done...?

Usually $2 if the buffet costs more than $10. A buck and whatever change is leftover if it's one of those few lunch buffets that cost less than $10.

buffets are weird. first people figure that since the server ain't bringing the food they aren't doing anything. i disagree. they clean the table of all the dishes. i go to buffets to eat a lot of diffrent foods. so there are many plates.

so i tip %10 unless they suck.

I hate tipping at buffets because the wait staff is so unnecessary. I have to get up and get my own food but you can't put a drink fountain out for me to use? Give me that and a place to put my dirty dishes and everyone is better off.

As far as the question, I typically only tip a dollar, maybe two, for each buffet purchased.

Buffets are hard to judge. I get the feeling that they actually provide more of a service than your typical restaurant, especially if they bring/refill drinks but they get shafted(with lower tips?) because of one sole reason that they didn't actually take an order. I guess we can argue they didn't bring the food to the table either but they do have to refill the buffet stations. And if we're discussing tipping on the taking of an order, people should be tipping when they go to a restaurant for take out but they don't.

The tipping custom in America IMO is illogical and odd. For every reason we can come up for why we tip, there is always similar line of work we could come up that is completely opposite but no one cares.

Why not? They clean your table, bring you drinks. Tip for service, that's what everyone says you're supposed to do here and if you don't you're a cheapskate.

No clue why not, guess it never happened. I figured waitstaff at buffets make minimum wage, and are essentially hosts.

Do you tip the host/hostess?
