Just remember that there's also a lot of money spent on designing the thing too.

I agree with you Jeff7, for a sum of design cost.
But Kendogg also right, on the 'profit margin' matter
Do you watch at prices? (of many peripheral and PC softwares)
Let us (as users) think the calculation of "Cost & Benefit Ratio"

May be for a year or two, its benefit are compensated for design cost,
and also production, packaging & shipping cost plus Tax.
And how many peoples buy it? Thousands? Hundred thousands?
The "price drop" is too low I think!
Of course the manufacturer also think about their "profit" to gain and
"developing" their industry (by build a new one or buy other)
Like Mr. Bill "The Hell" Gates Windows', Intel or NVidia!!
It's us, the users, that made them billionaire by buying their products!!

Its also about maintaining interest, price it high and people will lust after it, then after a couple of months lower the price and bingo more happy people.

Well, I can tell you approximately what Compusa pays for them, I got one with an employee discount cause a family member works there, his cost was $330.00 plus tax, supposedly employees buy at compusa's cost.

$4? I think not.

You can't even buy a fan/heatsink for that price. Then factor in the PCB, lots of very expensive high speed memory, the RAMDAC, the GPU and the external VGA/TV/DVI connectors and I'll think you'll find it'll be a lot more than $4. I'd probably estimate $50-$100.

Definitely costs more than $100 to build. The GF4 is probably $45-55 in quantities of 1000. 8 layer PCB's are quite costly to manufacture. I'd guess between $100-150 to manufacture/box.

I think the ultra-highspeed RAM on the card is the most expensive component on the card (certainly for the card manufacturers), although the GPU is probably pretty close.
