"Ex-'Idol' singer at car dealership
Hung performs for Modesto audience

Three years after "American Idol" judges rejected his peculiar singing talent during an open casting call, William Hung's notoriety is going strong and paying well.
Hung performed Saturday afternoon at the opening of a Modesto auto dealership.

"They usually ask me, 'Are you the "She Bangs" guy,'" said Hung, referring to the Ricky Martin song that brought about his unorthodox fame. "I have a lot of fun in general doing these kinds of performances."

Hung sang "She Bangs," along with "Achy Breaky Heart," originally recorded by mullet-crooner Billy Ray Cyrus, and Barry Manilow's "It's a Miracle."

The performance was mostly a karaoke rendition, as a recorded instrumental track played in the background. Hung belted out the lyrics in front of a few teenage, screaming "Idol" fans standing next to the stage.

He said performing in front of audiences has gotten easier; it's the larger crowds that make him nervous.

"I performed at the Rose Bowl at an event called Wango Tango in front of a crowd of 60,000 people," Hung said. "Now that's really nerve-racking."

That wasn't a problem Saturday, when about 30 people showed up for his two-hour appearance.

He still tunes in to the show that granted his fame, but he wouldn't pick any favorites among the seven finalists in the current season of "American Idol."

"They have some pretty good people on the show now with different styles of performing," Hung said. "It's too hard to pick one."

He wouldn't even lean toward Sanjaya Malakar, who has survived weeks of fans voting on who should be cut and the ridicule of judge Simon Cowell for lackluster performances.

Hung said he did not relate to Sanjaya at all.

"He has a unique style that gets him that huge fan base," Hung said. "I represent an attitude that a person never gives up their dreams."

Hung displayed some of that attitude to those who huddled beneath a tent to get out of the steady rainfall at Leer Automotive Pre-Owned car dealership on McHenry Avenue, just south of Standiford Avenue.

The singer made his way onto the stage flanked by two security guards, which Hung requires, said Stefan Leer, the dealership's president.

Leer wanted to capitalize on Hung's notoriety and the show's popularity to attract customers.

"I thought he would be the perfect candidate to get this store on the map," Leer said.

He said he spent a week negotiating with Hung's representatives before booking the performance. Except for just two dates this month, Hung was booked solid until October.

"He's that big," Leer said. "He just came back from filming a movie in Hong Kong."

Hung, who signed autographs and posed for photos, would not reveal his appearance fee. Leer wouldn't either, saying only "it's somewhere between $1 and $15,000."

It didn't matter to Jenessa McMillen and her friends Kyndal Dunbar, Sadie Gonzales and Kristen Bates. The 13-year-old girls from Modesto crowded next to the stage wearing homemade T-shirts declaring their love for William Hung.

"I like his dancing and the way he moves to the music," McMillen said. "We're his biggest fans."

I don't know, I think it's the perfect gift for the guy you hate but don't really want to directly piss off.

People smart enough to plan this kind of "present" would also send a "Regret can't be there" card :)

P.S. To make it extra painful, request "It's Raining Man" and "YMCA".
