Mods, if this belongs in SFF/NB, feel free to move it. It just seemed like a trivial enough issue for OT ;)

I've been shopping around for a laptop lately, and am still on the fence as to how powerful I need it to be.

All I'm going to be using it for is randon linux work (nothing taxing, just trying to learn the command line side of it), burning cd's, watching movies (mpegs and dvds, both on the notebook itself and on a television), listening to music, TS'ing into my main rig, and playing the occasional game (nothing more complicated than, say, an SNES emulator).

I'm currently debating between an Asus ( http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=34-220-054&depa=3 ) and a Dell Inspiron 600m

I love the look of the Asus like crazy, but I don't know if a) 256MB of RAM will be enough, and b) if the 12.1" screen will drive me crazy. I've never had to use a screen that small.

Do you need a small laptop for portability-sake?

For $1400, I'd consider an eMachines M6809. A64 3200+, ATi 9600, 15.4" Widescreen, DVD+-RW, etc.

the dell would have a better warranty, but it looks like pentium m would be overkill for what you'd be doing with it. my advice would be to get a cheaper laptop and get a longer in home warranty. (laptop warranty's are worth thier weight in gold)
