The cable guy is coming to install $50/mo cable today, and I'm thinking about calling them and telling them not to worry about it. The more I think about it, the less I can justify $50/mo for TV. $15 or $20, sure, but not $50.

How much do you pay?

Well, I get $10 off my cable modem, something like 50 channels, and the movie pack (I guess like HBO, Cinemax, etc), plus digital music stations.

I talked them down to no installation fee and $10 off for the first 3 months.

Still not sure if it's worth it though.

I pay something tike 13 dollars for analog basic cable. But unfortunately They haven't turned off the other channels. Also Cable internet supposedly knocks off 10 bucks for subscribing to cable tv, so I look at it like I pay 3 bucks for cable tv. So $57 for both services.

I wonder why cable is so expensive. I mean, they get the channels for free, right? 1 million subscribers at $50 a pop is $50,000,000 a month.

Their operating costs can't be that high.

Cable modem = £25 for 600/128

Sky digital multi channel package = £17 or £20 a month. I AM NOT GOING TO PAY FOR MORE. Can't justify it. I don't even spend that much time watching tv.

But for £20 I get Sky digital. All channels in lovely digital. It looks just like DVD's for most of the channels. You do get more artefacts on the more dodgy music channel but that doesn't bother me.

Well, I'm thinking about buying a TV card and recording my favorite shows that I always miss (like Good Eats and Nova).

I guess I'll try it for a month. I'll see how much I really watch.

$45/mo. for Family Cable which is the next step up from Basic Cable (the big 5 local stations). It's a ripoff, but it's also a monopoly... unless I go DirecTV and that ain't cheap either.

Internet is another $45 on top of that, but my company will soon be paying for it.

They do not get the channels for free. Many channels charge the cable companies a monthly fee for each subscriber. ESPN is hugely popular so they might get $1.50 a month from the cable companies for every subscriber that has ESPN. Smaller channels might only get a quarter per month.

The racket is when the cable company owns or is part-owner of a channel. The channel raises their rate, the cable company moans to the subscribers that they have to have an increase, but the money still ends up in the cable company's pocket.

$59.95 for 1500/128 cable internet
$13.95 for basic cable.

With taxes and fees the package comes out to $80

From friends I've talked to, basic cable rates here vary quite a bit, but magically most people have a total bill somewhere around $80 for internet + cable.

Digital Cable (Channels 2-70, 100-150) + Digital HBO (200-214) + RoadRunner = about a hundred a month.

Cable TV = $0 :)
Cable Modem = $0 :D
DSL + Phone = $70 :( (<-- Actually it's not that bad)

I've discovered in the last 3 months that I don't need to watch TV.

Edit: But I have been spending more $ on computer games lately. That's probably more expensive than cable TV!

channels for free??? bwahahahahahahahahahah!!

do you know how much HBO charges for the broadcast rights?

YES network charges $2+ per subscriber for the rights to air their product. You have 1million subscribers... you do the math.
