The group I began to oversee saw a 15% boost in revenue while keeping payroll flat, worth about $300k in additional profit.

How could you possibly answer that question? Even if you are in Sales, your sales figure isn't profit. There are costs associated to make/create the product, your own salary, etc.

If a company doesn't know how profitable a group is they are in trouble. You may not be able to boil it down to a single individual, but in many larger businesses you can break it down by teams.

I'm in sales and I know my company's average profit margin. I know that I wrote well over $150k in business last year. I'm not sure how many accounts I saved that don't get tracked though, so I'd guess I made the company roughly $250k last year. Probably much more this year with my new job.

I work on development projects for things 5 to 10 years away from production. It's hard to say.

man that's huge

Did they at least buy you lunch?

A couple of pizzas for dinner but that was due to that we had to work 18 hours days to get the project completed by the end of the year.

One reason why I'm interviewing elsewhere on Monday.

ouch

as much as I like to complain about my job...our bosses let us know that they realize and appreciate how much we do for the company. Sometimes they go overboard with it but its better than being ignored.

That reminds me...tomorrow is bring your Barbie to work day! I get to wear pink and bring in my favorite doll. They never said I couldn't bring a Real Doll....

i am at about 230k in revenue for the last 2 weeks. I directly generate revenue by performing the work for our customers. I like to be between 300k and 400k per month. This month should be pretty good. i normally work about 3 weeks per month on my 14 day on and 7 off schedule.

You don't even know half of it. The project was initiated in 2/11 but my managers didn't resource the project til Thanksgiving Day week knowing that it had to be completed before Xmas. We completed it on Friday, Dec 23rd at 6pm. And I was able to finally go Xmas shopping that night.

edit - more pathetic was that during last year all resources were thrown at a project that in the ninth month was discovered that the project would not meet business requirements and the project was scrapped. Thankfully, that was not my project.

I have to look at it more as how many more lives can be killed because of me. That said I have no idea. The stuff I was programming was twice removed from dropping bombs, and I'm sitting on my ass waiting for the next place I'm working to let me work at the moment.

Depends, not every project I work on is focused on driving revenue or cost savings; an example would be addressing a service quality issue where the main goal is to improve client satisfaction or address a common complaint. Even in cases where a project will save money, we're typically not going to spend money (e.g. doing a time study, etc) to find out how much.

Biggest project I've worked on lately where we did quantify the revenue boost was pegged at $80MM+ annually in non-compensable revenue, which means the money drops straight to the firm's bottom line without needing to be shared with someone who made a sale to obtain it.
