Aren't those managers, though? It says Janitor I in central management, but maybe central management is the office they work at. $70k to clean toilets, if that's what Janitor I means, is obviously too much and puts them pretty much in line with a lot of teachers, who necessarily are more educated and are involved in more difficult work (albeit not as shitty, har har).

Oh no look at him he makes more than me and I went to a prestigious university with 200,000 dollars in student loans, and the race to the bottom goes on,

Americans have been brainwashed to accept less and envy those that have more, remember when those in public service were looked down upon by those in the private sector because the sky was the limit in the private sector and then you were sold on globalization, free trade, and illegal amnesty and instead of asking why have we fallen behind you say why he gets so much more as a janitor.

Far too many of you have been told that these type of jobs should be minimum wage at best and they are beneath you especially if you have a degree,

So it must hurt seeing someone who in your mind is nothing more than a toilet bowl scrubber or a floor sweep and trash collector have better pay and benefits while you struggle to pay off your student loans, mortgage, daycare, car payments, etc.

Couldn't they just outsource it to some private contractor who uses minimum wage labor of questionable legality this way you can feel better that they don't make more than you while the owner of the private contractor firm rakes in the dough.

Here is the reality

The janitor didn't pass you up in pay and benefits, you in the private sector have fallen behind by design

There are two janitors at the AG office making 30, the rest of them are Janitor I/Janitor IIs. If they're all managers, I don't know who they manage:

Here's one example :https://www.linkedin.com/pub/polly-sabo/8b/922/25b from http://accountability.illinois.gov/...ployees.aspx?Year=2014&Title=21952&Agency=416

Color me shocked she makes $70K as a Janitor at IDOT. Here's the context:

Silly governmenthadists,.. these jobs could cost you far less! We can save you 20%, if you allow a private company to staff these positions!!

I mean, the employee will be getting $15K (because they ARE janitors after all,..) and we'll be keeping the $40K,.. because we came up with the awesome idea of taking saving the government's money!!

See, I can jump to conclusions with out any facts, background and legitimate points as well!!

Hooray!!

Maryland has the same type of system for government employees, it's pretty crazy some of the salaries people get. Most of it just seems to be from being there so long. Once they get the job, why leave. The ones that stuck out to me are the beer delivery or warehouse workers who were making over 80K.

There was also a correctional officer who made 191K which included 122K in overtime!

How about a library manager making 110K.

What kind of background do you need to see that a janitor is making more than twice the national average?

- job description
- the # of years they are in this position
- the hours they work each day
- the scheduled wage increases (where there any missed, etc.)

... you know, like every other job out there.

That's a fun dogmatic perspective you got there, just don't let reality creep in at all. Clearly the best way to prosperity is $70K Janitor jobs funded by taxing those that "struggle to pay off your student loans, mortgage, daycare, car payments" and deficit spending. Worked like magic for Greece.

What actually happened is the same thing that's been happening in Illinois for decades - CORRUPTION. You don't think there would be a line out of the door if the IL government was actually offering $70K Janitor jobs? Those jobs aren't actually available to normal people, they're given as favors by crooked politicians.

Are they working at a secure facility? I know janitors working in a place that they must pass certain background requirements makes the available labor pool for that position shrink massively.

A CEO of a private company is not the same thing as a government employee who gets paid by tax dollars.

How hard of a concept is this to grasp?

I read the other day about how someone had 2 kids: one who went to a prestigious university working an office job treading water financially, and another who dropped out and apprenticed as an electrician. After several years of apprenticeship they can look forward to 100k.

But no, we tell everyone to follow their dreams... into worthless degrees instead of productive ones like plumbing or electricians. Or even janitors. Although I agree those wages seem a little too high, I can tell you that janitors benefit society more than quite a few paper-pushers in offices all over the world, leeches on Wall Street, and those who don't even work. Nobody talks about WEALTH instead of income and how hugely unequal that is, way more unequal than income distribution. At least the janitors work for their money. What about trust fund babies who don't do any work at all but live off mommy and daddy's interest?

It's an interesting perspective though that it only seems high because the private sector has failed to keep up, not that the public sector has overpaid. Since about 1980, only the rich have really seen their hourly compensation rise along with their productivity.

partly this and some of these people have been in these position for 20-40 years. COL increases and performance increases.

It became commonplace to be jealous and spiteful somehow.

Lets blame the remaining middle class jobs that pay well.......

I have more scorn for the financial sector monkeys making six figures and think they are better than janitors and therefore think they are smarter and more deserving of their wages.

OP works in finance right?

I don't care about what some janitor makes. I care about how much CEOs with their golden parachutes made while they drove their companies into the ground and got rewarded when they got fired

I find this interesting. Why do you care if the owners of the company overpaid for an under performing CEO?

There is very little accountability at the CEO level. If your company is found guilty of any wrongdoing does a CEO get anything other than a golden parachute?

In the 20s CEOs were taken out of board rooms in handcuffs. Now they fly off in private jets if their companies do something wrong.

Why do you defend the rich and go after the poor common man that has to clean up the shit you leave behind?
