I never keep more than $500 in my checking account since it is connected to my check card.
My savings account has all my other money not in investments. I have a second checking account for bills. This checking account is not attached to my check card and just has the money I need to pay my bills monthly.
direct deposit enough into one checking to cover rent
about half the remaining goes into savings (longer term)
the other remaining half goes to checking, but gets cleared out pretty quickly
I direct deposit into my checking account, when it hits $4000 I transfer $2000 to my Fidelity mutual funds. I guess I dont really have a savings account per se, but I get a sweet return on my investments (~10-15% year).
