I either go to a self service car wash, or use the hose in my front yard :) $0.00 in tips spent

Usually do it myself, but in the winter I'll give the guys drying it a buck or two before they start to dry it.

before??? that's like tipping the waitress before she takes your order.

wait and see if they do a good job first.

Yeah I only do that because my reasoning is that not everyone gives a tip so they never know who will give it. If I give it to them before I hope it's extra motivation for them to do a good job.

Over the summer I wash my truck. Over the winter I take it there, normally tip 'em $2.

$0

We go through the automated car wash and get their "triple wax polish" which is probably nothing but soap & water but it gets the job done.

They usually charge $7 per car wash ... would I pay $7 a car wash?

Of course not!

They had $20 coupon books good for 6 car washes, so after I realized what a bargain it was I bought 4 coupon books (24 car washes total for $80, retail price $168, savings $88).

When u tip them, do you give it to 1 person only (they throw it into a tip jar don't they?) ?

It's a big scam. They use they vacuum cleaner to suck up a few coins here and there but by the end of the day, they probably have a mint in the vacuum.

Once I stupidly put $20 worth of quarters in my ashtray nice and neat. When I got my car back, there was NOTHING left. I called the manager out and he and the workers denied it. Since then, I only tip at places I know don't steal my change.

That is what I was wondering.
I tip the drier guy, cause he is the only one you can without getting soaked.....but what about the other guys - do they not get anything?

Or do they rotate shifts - one day you are a drier, one day you are a scrubber.......

$0 I don't like other people driving my car, period so they get nothing since I wash it myself.

BTW, RossMAN, those automated car washes are hell on your paint. Swirl marks, small scratches, etc...

I feel for you with regards to getting $20 in quarters ripped off. :(
But, I find it hard to believe that someone would go through the vacuum at the end of the day and pick out the change. Yuck! Then again, it might be better than "dumpster diving" for some people.

My wife made a notation about car washes a while back. Here in Northern Virginia, all the people working at car washes look like ex-cons. In Pennsylvania (in the country), mostly teenagers were working at the car washes.

How much do your dry'er guys expect to get tipped per car? And are we supposed to tip just 1 person or each person (yikes!).

By default don't you guys charge abourt $120 to detail the whole car anyway? I know its hard work and all but $120 is paying for your labor.
