How much do you charge your family members for computer repair?

I basically bought/ordered a new 250GB hard drive for my uncle's broken computer and he also wants me to upgrade his ram. The ram type is Rambus so I told him it's a little on the pricey side but I think he may want to go ahead with it.

How much do you normally charge your relatives? I try not to charge them anything. I am just a little shy of taking my own relative's money.

I formatted my aunt's computer because I had to get some spyware out and re-installed Windows onto her computer. Simple stuff, and I said no charge but she gave me $50.00 anyways.

Depends if I like them or not, and how often I do it.

For my Uncle's daughter who seemed to FUBAR the computer I built for him every couple of weeks, after the initial 6 months were up I told him I was charging him or he could take it to CompUSA.

For other relatives unless it was a major system overhaul, I usually didn't charge anything. They usually paid me in food though, which is always nice 🙂

Nothing. I won't accept money for computer repair from immediate relatives, but I've accepted money from extended relatives that insisted on paying (like my dad's very generous and wealthy uncle.)

Since it's not your parents or siblings, you could tell him "no charge", then grudgingly accept anything he insists on, like your aunt did.

I really didn't want to charge my aunt as she is my dad's sister and she does a lot for not only my dad but my family as a whole. I told her no charge and not to worry about it but she still insisted. I'm going to try to persuade this uncle of mine for no $0.00. He and his family just cooked my entire family (father's side) an entire Thanksgiving dinner which was very delicious. I'm thankful for them.

And I'm glad to see that there are other people who are not greedy and charge their family members $ for fixing their computers.

I don't.

They buy a Dell, Compaq or Gateway instead and use THEIR support.

Last week Dell had a Dimension 3000, 17" CRT and free color printer for $349 with free shipping and 1 year warranty.

I think you got bigger problems to worry about 🙂

They are either close enough for me to do it for free, or I don't do it. I do have one friend I do a lot of work for (3 PCs in the house) and I get money pushed on me, but I don't charge...

Why you little...heh well you get what I mean. I built it for my uncle and his daughter proceeds to destroy it on bi-monthly basis.

I don't charge family...but most of them are really good cooks, so scheduling fixes near dinner time is always a must. 😉

I don't normally charge but when I do upgrades I tell them as long as they pay for parts and I get the old I'm fine with it

depends on the situation and how far i have to drive. sometimes i charge them as much as $25-$30 + parts if it's really inconvenient. other times i'll do it for a dinner.
