how much do you actually work?

For those of you not in a production/retail position, how much work do you actually do in a day?

Lets say on a 8-hour shift 9-5, when you are sitting on a computer.

i am a programmer and i spent 2hours or more not work each day..

haha opps, i do work in my head. I generate algorithms in my head. In fact, i have my work done for the next week.. all in my head. I just need to type it out..

The work I do is constantly slowed by other people. That and meetings. I'm still do more work than nearly anyone else, so I don't fret about what percent of my time is spent on work.

Oh a productive day, half of the hours I'm paid for. Most days, probably about a quarter. If I'm sucked into any meetings my productivity is usually just plain screwed for the whole day.

"In a week, I'd say I only do about 15 minutes of real, actual, work." 😛

Tech support/part time webmaster at a software company. It's boring 90% of the time but it pays the bills. Not to mention, I can wear whatever I like to work and my boss is pretty cool.

70% of the time I make up for my low pay by drinking as much office coffee, snacks, playing FreeCiv, recharging my ipod, pda, and cell phone with free electricity.
20% of the time I'm acutally working
10% of the time I'm taking a break.

The joys of being a systems admin with stable systems.

its really busy around here so i'd say maybe 80-90% of the time. i have to take breaks or else my brain will melt...

lol...i hear that.

but also i work in spurts...I can work really fast and get what needs to be done finished, but then i need a break otherwise i become less productive.

if i was forced not to take breaks I wouldnt get as much done

it depends 100% of the day and what you consider work.

if I'm stuck on monitoring duty, then you could say that I do 8 hours of work. but monitoring duty is usually pretty boring, so I usually monitor servers in one window and use the other window to surf the net.

there have been days where it's been busy (re: every few days after a new destructive worm is released) where I've spent 100% of my shift doing real back-breaking work, and there have been days where I spend my entire shift shopping on-line because there's nothing going on.

on an average day, if you count random reboots and monitoring duty as work, I'd say I tend to work for 5-6 hours during an 8-9 hour shift. my periods where I don't do work are rarely longer than 30 minutes at a stretch, though.

Lately I haven't had much to do. I'll get a project that I can finish in a couple of hours and then slack the rest of the day or I will get projects that aren't due for weeks but only really take a week's worth of work, so I'll slack some then.

Sometimes I am really busy and will work like 10 hours. Sometimes I do get a break though and can slow down. They really dont pay me enough to deal with all these problems.

Not in a retail position but I would say about 14% of my week is actual work. Full time 40hrs. The other 86 is watching tv and playing online.

Heh. I bet someone in your office who monitors network usage just read that message and sent it to all managers 🙂

Wouldn't happen where I work because I do the monitoring 😉

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Sysadmin

Aside from normal scheduled breaks and calling into tech to report problems, I'd say I'm mostly available for the incoming calls. Working in a call centre environment with stats up the ying yang, there's no room for slack. 🙁
