I've always wondered how much it would cost because they get to control how much syrup goes in the coke/pepsi, right?

They're rented under a contract.

Coca-Cola/Pepsi gives you the machine for free, but you have a contract to buy their products, and use only their products in their machines.

don't they have people from the company checking on those things to see if the mixture actually tastes right?

Yeah, they do. But the machines are usually setup by Pepsi/Coke AFAIK.... I don't think the restaurants are supposed to mess with them much.

I don't think the machines themselves are very expensive, but then you also have to buy the CO2 equipment and syrup...

Yeah, it's usually a contractual thing, although you can certainly buy the machines if you want. I just don't know how you would get bulk syrup.

Maybe they have a CO2 regulator built in, not sure.. My wild guess would be about 1,500$ all said and done. I really have no idea though. ;)

Thing is, some places just for some reason have very damn good coke, other friends have confirmed it too. There's a Domino's Pizza nearby and they have the best coke in the area, I stopped there once just for the coke :p

Maybe I've gone crazy?

I worked at a restaurant before. I dont think you get to control how much syrup goes in the coke. If you really want to mess with it, I guess you could. But it's all setup by the guy who supplies the CO2 tank and the syrup. And nobody really ever wanted to adjust anything other than just replacing the CO2 tank (when it';s out) or the syrup container.

mcdonalds have the best fricken coke (at least around here)

i've gone there several times just for a large coke (especially in the morning)

also, we have a soda fountain at work, but no one has hooked it up yet (been sitting there for a couple months now)

Haha, I was hoping it was a one time fee or something but the contract thing sounds about right :p

Well it has been some years but the last time i worked somewhere that had a machine i knew the actual coast of a 16 oz glass of coke cost the resturant around 5 cents ( or close to it) and that wasnt too too long ago. I did mess with a machine back when I was in high school. the diet coke always was funny so when the coke guy came to fix it he showed me where to adjust it.

Maybe that Subway trains its employees on how to adjust the soda fountain? ;)

No. The only thing we know how to do is change the boxes of syrup. ;)

Coke supplies kegs of syrup or box of syrup to restaraunts which is mixed with carbonated water in the fountain. You can buy the boxes of syrup at Sam's Club, but you have to have a fountain to use it with. Coke tries to make their products consistant from package to package (they have a reputation to maintain), but it's impossible for them to taste the same always (since the container affects the taste). Out of the fountain, Coke can vary based on the water in the carbonated water and the amount of carbonation and the ratio of syrup to carbonated water (all of which can be adjusted). Some kegs of soda may have been premixed with filtered water.

Both Coke and Pepsi will own the machines and do the maintenance on them. You are responsible for the general cleanliness of the machine to meet local health code standards. You buy the syrup and the CO2 from them. Both Coke and Pepsi will provide the syrup and CO2 for free if you?re willing to do a participation share on the beverage sales.

Correct. I've been to 3 Subways which had perfect Pepsi, it was weird.

Subways in my neck of the woods serve Coke and Dasani.

of course not, it polices itself. If the mixture doesn't taste like coke/pepsi, people wouldn't go to the joint. Hence, bad for business.

As a former mid-level manager I can tell you that McDonald's coke systems cost about 30k. That is not installed and does not include the fountains or the ABS(Automated Beverage System) in the drive thru. That is just for the multiplex in the back. Additionally as part of the agreement Coke sends our technicians quarterly to calibrate the fountains to ensure that the product is being dispensed correctly.

If you speak with any of the fountain tech people, the non coke employed ones, they will tell you that the coke at McDonald's is as close to the coke at the bottling plants as you can get without building an actual bottling plant.
