they make good money in hourly wages.

i dont think they get many hours tho.

Yea, hours suck for mail carriers. If you work in a distro center it's better hours but less money I think. I knew two carriers and they both had two jobs.

friend of mine worked as one in nyc making 40K + paid overtime (which he did alot of) so im guessing they make pretty good $. .. he quit recently to go back to engineering ...

My friend's mother works for the postal service. I'm not sure what she does but she's able to afford a BMW and a really really nice house.

It depends if you're a full time career employee or just part time help. USPS does not hire very many career full time employees anymore though, but have a bunch of old timers bleeding money through their system.

Maybe she's just terrible with money management?

They do pretty well. My uncle works as a postman in Houston - maybe he makes more because he walks instead of driving the car, but he and his kids all have nice cars. Their house is furnished very well too.

I think that they start out in the low to mid $30's by me.

I don't know if it is a requirement or anything but all of the postal carriers by me are always pissed off at the world for some reason.
"Here's your mail, you son of a..."

My wife and her friend took the postal exam on a lark and both passed without doing any preparation. A few months later they were contacted for part-time positions as letter carriers, and they heard through the grapevine that it was very likely the route would be a walking route in bad urban neighborhoods. The positions are by seniority so as soon as someone has been there long enough to get a better route (especially one where you just drive), there are openings in the crummy assignments.

IIRC, the job paid over $17/hour.
