I would like to quite my current middle school teaching job and go back to school to do something in the computer field, more hardware oriented than software. Are network administrators "hot" right now and what is the typical salary? Any other "hot" jobs that pay well?

Have fun competing against 1,000 other "I got my MCSE at Heald college, I'm going be a network admin!" guys for the 3 jobs that are currently available in the US.

Nothing in the computer field is hot right now. Many people who have degrees in computers are working in another field right now because there are no computer jobs available. I'd recommend staying as a teacher until the economy recovers in about 5 years or so.

The only jobs I'm finding right now pay $30K a year less than I was making a year ago.

If you are in the computer field now and made it through the bubble you will probably do OK. If you are not yet in the field you may find it VERY difficult to get your foot in the door.

I'll trade ya. You can have my IT job and I'll take your teaching job. :)

In all honesty, that's the path I will be taking. I've made my money and done burned myself out of the IT field.

Uhg.

Here's something I posted in the Unemployment thread:

Well, here's an article in CNN about the fields where jobs are expanding. Ever think of becoming a nurse? (2 years in school and not be squemish about blood or needles) or an accountant (although you need to pass the CPA tests)

The HOT fields right now

If you really want a job, you don't only have to know Unix, you have to be very good with it too. A degree doesn't say much because I know from experience, if you don't use a lot of the powerful tricks in Linux, you will forget them in no time.

I think they did in a round about way. Network administrators make no money because they aren't employed;)

well, 6 years ago, my friend dropped out of high school at 16 and worked as a pc tech. he was making like $25k/year which isnt bad for a 16 year old living w/his parents and no expenses. over the next 2 years he gets his mcse. he had the luck of the irish. perfect timing. start of the tech boom. at 18 he was making $70k/year. i have no idea how's he doing now since i lost touch with him.

I'm right there with ya....Network Admin but my salary is just a tad higher though. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!! Actually I shouldn't bitch too much since I got a refund this year. Of course the only reason I got that is because I bought a house and have all those expenses to deduct.

Depends on the area but mostly on your experience. Back when the economy was hopping, a newbie with little or no corporate experience usually started out on the helpdesk or such and made maybe $35-45. After 5+ years of experience with alot of different platforms, $60-80K. Unix guys usually made more. Database administrators made the most in my experience.

Today it is totally different. Many companies are just educating their existing staff and promoting them. This was rarely done in the past because they were scared the people would take the knowledge and jump ship. Now days there is no place to jump too.

People like me with 13+ years experience are having trouble finding anything that pays over $50k.
