Very few people get company pensions. Changing jobs, company bankruptcy or reorganizing under a different name every 3-4 years is pretty common.

This is why the United Mine Workers fought for control of the pension funds. In union mines, the company pays into the union pension fund and the union distributes the pensions. It isn't a perfect system but it does protect the members from some of the problems you mention.

What does a college degree have to do with making 50K a year? You'd be surprised at some of the salaries that people without college degrees make.

Someone said miners have college degrees, or implied it, which is untrue.

People who speak about outliers allt eh time. Look at what a college degree gets you in terms of AVERAGE SALARY. AVG SALARAY with HS degree only is extremely low...

Today they make enough money to live on (they also have to pay into their own retirement/disability fund). But the job has more hazards than just caveins and gas explosions -- black lung is a major disabler (which they recieve benefits from that's offset via SS).

My neighbor was a WV coalminer but joined the Army to get away from that life (it was god awful work until the reforms after the 70's). When they moved here their kid for years had breathing problems. Now he's a strapping 6'4" guy and you'd never would've known he hacked all through childhood.
