topic says it all.

In the market for a new one. burnt some popcorn in the microwave and it left a bad smell in it.

in the last twenty years we have had 2. current one I bought back in 96/97. then before that one from the 80s.

search on sears.com shows some models in the 70+ to 100+ range. Lower priced ones are bit too small.

is that the average cost these days? Its been so long since we bought one. I probably should've gotten the builtin microwave option but it was a waste of money then, as we had a perfectly good microwave.

That's pretty average. Spend at least 75 for one as the cheaper ones suck (don't heat fast, no controls, etc). If you have a family and expect to use it for many years, then spend more.

It completely depends on how big and what options you want on the microwave. I mean, you can get a tiny one with a turn-dial as a timer for like $30. You can buy a built in that'll "roast" a turkey for $400. A mid-sized middle-of-the-road options will run you about $70-$100 as you've already seen.

Go to Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy, Wal Mart, etc. and see what they've got.

The microwave you bought in 1996 might be like 400-700W. A microwave today is going to be like 1000-1400W or something like that. It'll warm stuff up a lot faster, and that was a significant part of why I traded in my 1992 version.

If you're happy with what you already have, why don't you just clean the one you have.

Edit:
My mom is still using the monster that they bought in like 1981 (I wonder how much it was?). It takes like 6 minutes to heat up water.
