Ouch, depending on how fast the laptop is(or how much it's worth with a good screen), it might not be worth fixing it.
I was looking for a 14.1" LCD for a Gateway a while back, and found them going for about $150-200 on eB@y. If the laptop was worth more than $200 I probably would've tried to fix it.
Depends on how big the screen is, and how hard it is to find for that model, you might get lucky and not need more than $100 for a new one. Check out eB@y though, just to get an idea of what they're worth, and their model number. There's several stores in the US that sell refurbed screens or even new ones, seperately from the laptop.

If it's the LCD you're probably looking at several hundred dollars at a minimum. It may just be the FL Inverter which powers the backlight on the LCD is out. Is the image on the screen really faint? If so then your backlight isn't working. It could be bad or just not getting an juice.

You can do a warranty lookup on Dell's website. It's under support. I think they'll ask you for your "service tag" or something like that. It's a 6-10 digit code on the bottom of the laptop. Punch that in and you can check out all kinds of stuff about that machine.

I have looked through delltalk and have seen several other people with the same notebook who have experienced the same problem.

the picture is faint, it so dim that I have to turn the lights out just to see the screen!

If you are getting some backlight, then most likely your FL tube is going out or not getting enough power. Pull the LCD mask off and check all the connections. I have seen dim screens caused by the two wire for the FL tube not being seated all the way in. Make sure you do this with the power off.

Most laptop screens arn't super hard to swap. You should check out EBAY and see if anyone is selling the screen for one of those... you could probably pick one up for $100 or so and swap it.. if you get a good one, and the installation goes smoothly it would be worth it I think. What are the specs on that laptop ?
