like for fedex & ups?

I'm thinking of going for an interview with them and getting a part time driver position.

how much do they make does anyone know?

You can't just go be a driver, they fill those from within. Expect a lot of years tossing freight before you get to be a driver.

They make decent money, but they have to be there a while to do it.

well my local fedex is advertising that they need drivers.

i sent them my resume online and got an email back.

saids that i can come and see them anytime from 9 to 2pm during the week for the interview.

Figured that the job couldn't be that hard, you're driving all day long and no one to bother you. Great way for me to make money while going to school.

Do you have a CDL?

I dunno, but I saw a classified ad the other day where a guy was trying to SELL his FedEx route... not sure why they'd let you do that, but I guess it must pay decently.

Wow. it's that cutthroat? lol.

. no i don't have a CDL.

Iirc they pay close to $15 an hour starting, but, as someone else said, that's in a warehouse somewhere and you generally need to work your way up to driver. If they specifically said driver though, go for it and assume $15/hr or more. Delivery is a cool job.

Cool cause they said delivery specifically and they'll need background & driver's license check.

FedEx Home delivery is handled differently than the rest of FedEx. From what I've heard:

- FedEx helps you set up a route for "home" deliveries.
- FedEx helps you get the vehicle, which you lease.
- FedEx anticipates that you can make $40 - 50K the first year.

In essence, this operates like a franchise, so I can see how the guy was trying to sell his route. But, do keep in mind that the "home" deliveries run Tuesday - Saturday and deliveries can take place up until 8:00 P.M. each of those evenings.

That's interesting... is the $40-50k your net profit, after the cost of the lease and whatnot? It seems like a strange thing to operate as a "franchise," since you have absolutely no control over how much business you get. I guess you get paid by the package?

That's my guess. I was involved with attending some "career night" programs a bit over a year ago. During one of the events, a person from the HR department at FedEx came in and explained how it worked. It seemed interesting. I guess it's a way for FedEx to run things more efficiently and not unionized.

It sounds like you applied with FedEx to work in their warehouse and on their routes - which I'm assuming are the routes where they handle the express packages. The home delivery routes are run completely different - as I've described above.

I did a little digging at the FedEx site. The drivers for the Ground and Home deliveries are referred to as independent contractors by FedEx. Here's a link to some of that information along with the option of searching for such opportunities for your area:
