How much do Computer Assemblers make??

Hi

i have a friend that just got this job at a pretty well known computer company and they are payinghim and most of the new assemblers $7-8 an hour

it seems kinda low to me

he must build 8+ computers a day but he must do all this wiring and cable folding stuff

how much do ppl from Dell, Compaq, etc... make an hour??

Beats the hell out of me how much they make at Dell or Compaq, but I have made as much as $400 on a system. Probably took about 35-40 hours...

8 a day?!?! that's almost nothing.. when i did it for one summer i made 8 in two hours or less... got paid $10/hr...

it's more of a factory/assemby type job in a way, don't really troubleshoot them in a large factory themselves

well they only ask 8 or more per day cause sometimes you have to build dual proc systems and servers

and also the wiring and IDE cable folding jobs take up sometime too
they dont just connect all the cables and leave it hanging out there
like you probably did

ya all they do is build
they dont install the software or anything else

Seems like just the right wage to me. I don't think you'd earn much more than the minimum wage on something that just about everyone can do with little training, such as putting a computer together physically in one way without getting into configuration, flipping burgers and such.

doesn't take much skill in the manufacturing industry to put together a system... it's usally repetitive job though, wages ranging from around 10 - 15

so how come dell sells their system so much more higher than what we can build one for? SHouldnt they infact be able to sell their system way cheaper than what w ecan build one for considering they build in bulk?

Honestly, in today's market, the price advantage for a do-it-yourself build is not the reason we do it.

And there's plenty of costs you don't see. Mainly:

S-U-P-P-O-R-T

Putting systems together is essentially unskilled labor, $7-8 an hour in today's economy should not be bitched about.

What kind of system took 35-40 hours and got you $400???? I would like to know so I can start building them! I do system build for people and get $75 a system. Takes about and hour or two to build and load windows on it.

$7.00 to $10.00 (max) sounds about right. The OEMs are just like assembly workers, you don't have to actually know what the hell you are handling or how it works. Its just learning "Insert Tab A Into Slot A, Insert Screw B into Hole B".

your friend is just an assembler, u don't really even have to mention the computer part ^_^

yup, putting a system together is an unskilled job, anybody can easily learn it.

now troubshooting after putting together a system requires a lot more skills, you gotta have experience with all kinds of os, gotta know which isnt compatible with which, know the optimizations for a certain os, at last you need patience for troubleshooting, some time you need to take the computer u just built apart piece by piecce to eliminate and locate problems, that is a major pain in the ass.

I think Spherion, which is Dell's temp subcontractor, starts at $8.00 per hour for assembly/packaging here in Austin. Temp job and no clocks on the walls either.

Spherion starts phone techs a little over $10 per hour. I was offered a job there as a phone tech starting at $12.50 per hour last January.

<< man one of the korean guys at my work can build like 60 a day when there are big orders >>

how many hours does he work? Let's say he works 12 hours. 5 computers in an hour, 1 in 12 minute...... you have to show me that guy...

Not at all difficult. A friend of mine owned a computer shop for 13 years. He'd get these large contracts. The parts were all laid out and his techs had power screw drivers. One guy assembled one in 9 minutes. Fooling around on a Saturday, I got down to 14 minutes. That was HDD, CD, FDD, ATX mobo, case, video card, sound card, NIC, CPU, heatsink and fan, and cables. The drives were already imaged.

Made 12 an hour about 3 or so years ago building compaqs..

but then again I was averaging about 35-40 builds a day,

or around 60 units that were quality tests and imaging

building was grunt work and you really didn't have to even speak english to do it.
