How much do brake pads cost?

My 2002 hyundai elantra just failed inspection because the brakepads in the front and rear need to be replaced - the dude wants $275 including the cost of the inspection to replace them... Is that a decent deal or should I just pay the $37 and take it elsewhere?

edit: i won't cover for myself - i was a dumbass and typed "break" instead of brake.. sorry, I'm tired 😉

Why would you want pads to break? Unless you mean you need pads to brake. Yes, pet peeve of mine.

Anyhow, less then $50 in parts from autozone and maybe 1-2 hours to change. Oh wait, front and rear. Prolly ~$75 or so in parts, 3 hours labor? Brake pads are pretty easy to change. Why not just do it yourself? I think $275 sounds ok for all 4 tho.

that is a bit steep unless it takes special pads
call another shop and ask them what they charge

3 hours? No way. Probably take about 10-15 minutes per wheel if you take your time.

is it really something a noob can do? Would I have to invest in a lot of tools and such? I'll call places in the neighborhood just to see what the going rate is - the dealership wanted $350...

I never was a fast mechanic😛 Good thing I don't try to make a living at it.

Honestly, all you need are a few sockets, a jack, and a big pair of slip-joint pliers. Some grease would be good too for the caliper pins. So yes, do it yourself🙂

Well, if you don't have tools and a garage or don't feel very comfortable doing something like this then you might want to just pay the $275 and pay someone to do them.

It isn't very difficult though. You would need a jack, a pair of jackstands, a socket set would be helpful, a C clamp and a bottle of brake fluid (don't shake it up though) at the very least. You might need a torx head socket...some cars use this type of bolt to hold the calipers. Some cars you don't even need to remove the calipers to hang pads though. If you're interested in doing some repairs yourself you should buy a Haynes manual and read the procedure. It is pretty easy really.

If your rotors are scored or slightly warped you might want to take them to a machine shop or auto parts store and have them turned. They usually charge around $10 to do this.

A set of pads usually run around $30-35 for fronts and about the same for rears.

Yeah, on a car I haven't done them on it usually takes me twice as long on the first wheel but the second one I can usually cut that time in half. Down to about 10-15 minutes. I've never done this for a living. Just always done my own cars.

If you do it yourself, don't forget to have an extra body around to help you bleed the brakes. Bleeding is a MUST, especially when installing new pads.

What state do you live in?

Unless you car is pulling or making noise they do not have the right to take your wheels off.

Go get another look at them first

Not really - there's not much reason why air would get introduced into the system if all you're doing is the pads.

Yeah. Why would you need to bleed the system?

for around $89 you can go to sears and get a nice basic tool setup, also buy a brake caliper spreader from sears or auto parts store, they are like 10 bux

i bought ebc green stuff pads for my talon... granted you dont need high performance pads on a hyundai, but they were only $50

so thats what, $150 and you can do both your front brake pads in prob under an hour, its not rocket science... and thats including jacking up the car and taking wheels off...

just use jack stands and if you REALLY dont know what to do, spend $15 on a manual

most places do inpsections for $25 or so... pass or fail.. and then you've got a set of tools that will last a lifetime and you can do it again should you need em, or on another car

I never bleed the brakes when changing pads. You only need to do this if you get air in the lines such as when you rebuild a caliper or remove a caliper from the brake line. I just tie it up out of the way with the brake line attached.

Brakes aren't too difficult to do if you have decent instructions. I would get a Haynes or Helm manual and find out what kind of tools you will need. Once you have review the repair and have an idea how much it would cost you do it yourself you can decide whether or not to do it yourself.

Have the shop give you a written estimate with an expiration date in case you decide not to do the work yourself.

NYS. I'm going to the place now and will take it somewhere for a 2nd inspection (friend of the families may give us a better deal on the brakes if they need to be replaced)
