Thought it might be interesting to see how much all these builds actually cost.
To start with my rig cost me:
50 sound card
30 PSU
40 case
99 motherboard
200 cpu
50 hard drives (80 and 320)
225 video card
200 RAM (I bought it before prices dropped unfortunately)
30 heatsink

total: 924 before taxes/shipping for the rig in my profile.

Would have been about 130 cheaper if I bought RAM today since ddr2 8500 is about $70.

refurb 530 from delloutlet

219 case, power supply, motherboard, 1gb of ram, dvd-rw, heatsink, onboard sound, vista premium, 250gb hard drive, wireless pci, bluetooth card reader
35 additional 2gb ddr-800 ram
105 cpu e6550 (cost 150-45 for selling the e2140 that was in it)
60 video card 8600GT

total: $419 before shipping and tax (though the upgrades had shipping included in the prices when bought) this is for my spare system. Too afraid to see how much i have total into my main system.

Wife's new build:

Case/mobo/PS from Newegg promotion - $50 after rebate
Celeron E1200 - $52
HD and 2 GB of DDR2 RAM - taken out of this computer!
SATA DVD - $26

Not bad for $128 for everything for a fully-functional computer. The motherboard has nVidia onboard and a PCI-X 16 if I ever want to add a video card to it.

This is my new system assembled a week ago. Prices listed include tax, postage, discounts, and rebates:

+ $60 AR ... Antec P182 case
+ $35 AR ... Antec Neo HE 500W power supply
+ $205 ... Xeon E3110 (aka E8400)
+ $60 AR ... Abit IP35-E motherboard
+ $196 ... ASUS EN9600GT video card
+ $29 AR ... 2 GB Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4
+ $ 60 ... Seagate 320 GB SATA hard drive
+ $ 30 ... Samsung SH S203B SATA dvd-rw

The total comes to less than $700 (675?) including tax and postage (both of which I almost universally avoided through choice of retailers and discounts), though that's after $155 in rebates. Haven't added any other hard drives yet (though they're sitting around), so I'm not including their prices. No aftermarket cooling.

We're not including monitors? Personally I'm saving up for an Apple 23-inch Cinema eventually because I do want a 1920x1200 S-IPS LCD panel, but at present I've a Dell 1905FP that cost me about $300 a couple of years ago.

I'm not including my monitor since I'm currently using a 42" 1080p plasma so that would distort my total price a lot. My mouse and keyboard were from a trade so not sure how to price that.

case: 250
mb: 140
cpu: 180
ram: 90
gpu: 165
sound: 182
optical: 30
fans + controller: 70
cpu cooler: 45
hdds: 400
psu: 140

this isn't very accurate, nor is anyone else's "price list" because people tend to upgrade and keep old stuff (such as my $180 Audigy 2 ZS platinum), people also sell stuff to upgrade, and some buy used items, and everyone buys at different times Q6600 for $290 3 months ago Q6600 $190 today.

Backup rig is:

mb w/v,s,l = 60
X2 3800 = 50
200gb ide = 30ar
2gb DDR2 667 = 6ar (HP deal)
DVD burner SATA = 30
380w mini ATX psu = 20ar
old E-machines case = free

total = 196

reusing old kb, mouse, speakers (kb was originally 10, optical mouse was 6, speakers were free), using the wife's old 20" lcd monitor, which, in it's day was probably more than the rest of the rig.

You win the prize for best thing on the internet, congrats. It's not a competition. Prices change all the time and new hardware comes out obsoleting yesterday's technology.

true, but it's always fun to laugh about it later when new hardware does come out. Also a few things don't change in price often or were purchased at such a low price that they don't go down in price at all (maybe even go up).

once again, this thread is bad because people buy their parts at diff times, stores, and used/new/free.

theres bound to be some people with "i got my q6850 for free" in their system price which then makes the post pointless.

I maybe biased since I'm the op, but I disagree. I understand it feels bad sometimes when you feel like you overpaid once prices drop, but I think it is still helpful to others.
Even used prices are helpful since they give sellers an idea of what to sell for and buyers an idea of what to pay.
New prices are even better even if they do vary from different times and places. Having some information is better than having no information. Knowing the cheapest price it has been and what others have purchased at is still helpful in shopping around.
I agree that gifts and other things not purchased aren't helpful, but if it was free after rebate that is a different matter. Regardless I think those posts can be ignored easily enough.

I won't bother doing my primary rig...

$650 - Enermax FS2300BB case
$55 - Asus mATX 775 mobo
$75 - Intel E2130
$60 - Hitachi 160gb hd

That mobo looks so funny in that case.

nobody really overpays for anything. everyone (at most) pays the price the item is worth in the market. Hence they pay the 'market price.' you can view this as you get what u pay for, if i paid $280 for my q6600 6 months ago and u paid $200 now, i got 6 more months of usage out of my q6600 than you.

how would u calculate that into this thread??

I did say "feel" not actually overpay. Also it is possible to overpay if they purchase from somewhere overpricing an item i.e. bestbuy selling 8800gtx for $940 when everyone else is selling it for much less. Knowing others bought it for much less within 30 days may allow a return or a price match which I think would be helpful to the person who overpaid.

I undestand that time is valued differently depending on the person since people were paying thousands for wiis when they first came out. If they don't want to post they don't have to. If they do however their experience may still helpful to others, and if not it is easy enough to ignore.

The only thing new is my CPU/mobo, but here is what I am setting up:

-AMD Phenom 9500: $120
-Abit AX78 AM2+ Mobo: $85 AR
-ACF 64 Pro HSF - ~$30 IIRC
-4GB (2GBx2) OCZ DDR2-800: $55 AR
-eVGA 8800GTS 512MB: $207.49 AR
-Corsair HX520 PSU: ~$70 AR w/ GCO
-Case: Antec something: ~$50 IIRC
-Maxtor 200GB HDD - $40
-Samsung 205BW LCD - $199.99
-Vista HP Upgrade Ed: $70

Total: $727.49 w/o monitor, $927.48 w/ monitor

OK GUYZ
I think even though I missed a few deals that came a little later I did well. can't remember all the individual prices.

Acer 22" $220

E4500
IP35-E, Vista Home Premium,
MSI 9600GT
160GB 7200.10
2x2GB DDR2 800
DVD burner
Firewire PCI
20 dollar Best Buy Dynex case w/ 500W cheapo PSU deal (works fine though)
Think that's about it.

Grand total including shipping and tax after MIR was $860. Minus $220 monitor, $640.

Without tax and shipping and after MIR around $100 less.

So, I guess... it's like a $540 rig that plays Crysis perfectly fine, considering people usually don't add in that stuff when they talk about custom build $$$.

This is such a subjective comparison. Aside from price changes, personal preference and needs change price/performance ratio, because what I need to perform at maximum capabilities for my own system is different than what you need to perform at maximum capabilities for your system. You can't compare apples and steaks.
