I have no idea how much the P3 866 in my server cost when I bought it about 2 years ago. It was probably several hundred dollars, being the top-of-the-line at the time. It's probably worth less than $40 now, I can't find any place that sells it.

The Athlon MP 1200 CPUs in my main rig cost $72 a piece when I bought them 3 months ago. Now they are $64.

The P3-S 1266 CPUs in this rig cost $165 a piece when I bought them 2 months ago. That has not changed in any significant way.

Ditto. Especially since mine is running at 1.46Ghz at default voltage.

Paid $49 for an Athlon TBred 'B' 1700+ at NewEgg about a month ago. Currently $60 at NewEgg, marking the first time in my life that ANYTHING I've bought has gone up in price after buying it. Usually it goes up right before I buy and down immediately afterward.

I bought my P4 1.6A retail box last May, that's 9 months ago, at $140 in a computer show. It's going for about $110 on pricewatch right now, give or take.

Do modifications count?
:)

AMD Athlon XP 1800+

~$140 in June
~$110 in August

Now they're AMD Athlon MP 1800+ processors. It's the damnedest thing.

They're ~$150 now.

Ouch. That's why I buy behind the curve. I've got a general rule: Upgrade to a processor twice as fast as my current one, when a processor *3* times as fast is released (upgrade from 1GHz to 2GHz when 3GHz is released). Seems to be a good sweet spot.

I bought an XP 2000+ a week ago, bare CPU, had an HSF already. Got it with the fry's deal with the K7S5A. The CPU price is 84 normal, 54 in the combo. I don't use the board, needed it for another box.

1600XP+ (1.4ghz) for $57 end of August, now it's $49

BUT

I have it overclocekd at 1950XP+ speed (1.63 ghz) which lies between $64 -$70, So technically, I'm still ahead of the game!!!

Not only that, I did it with an $8 HSF, and my temp right now is 42 celcius!!! it hits 54 at full load in a really really hot room! That's awesome!
