No receiver, I have a Preamp. B&K Reference 50 Series II. 7.1 speaker setup. Definitive Technology speakers, M&K sub.
The setup:
B&K Preamp, $2000
McIntosh MC2205 2 channel amp, $1700 new
Anthem MCA 5, 5-channel amp for center and surrounds, $1200 new, I paid 600 used
M&K V75 sub, $700
Definitive BP 1.2 surrounds (4 total), $175 each
Definitive C/L/R 2000 center channel, $500
Definitive BP 2002 Mains, $999 each

XBox 360 w/HD DVD
PS3

Mains also have built-in 12" 125 watts subs, so 3 subs total with the M&K.
Both amps are rated at 200 watts per channel. My dad bought the McIntosh amp new in, I think, 1977. The McIntosh Sound Lab was in town when he bought it, and it tested at 277 WPC steady before it exceeded it's rated distortion. Not sure if it has that much "omph" left, but it's plenty strong and sounds great.
The Anthem amp is solid. Very impressive.
I'm kicking around the idea of selling the Anthem, and getting a 7-channel amp with XLR inputs, since the preamp has them.
I've had the Definitives for about 10 years now. The still rock, and I've never really had the urge to replace them yet. My living room where I have this set up is small, and this system literally will hurt your ears while still sounding clear as a bell. My amps never have to work hardly at all. That's good, though...it's always better to have a more powerful amp that's loafing than a less powerful amp that's running right at its peak power.

Edit: Updated the rest of my system

That IS a nice sub. But I'm wondering....why run nice speakers and a sub like that with a cheap receiver? Unless you're just using the Sony to get by for awhile?

Yeah, I'd like to hear the reasoning behind it too.

i paid $500 for a then-current floor model, normally $800. $800 is historically the price where the good stuff starts, but lately you can do very well for $500 brand new.

I think you mean PSW10 Sub.

I really like the sound of the Polk R50 considering the price. I actually ran just those two speakers for a year before filling out the 5.1 system, and they sounded really good IMO.

Living room 7.1:
Onkyo 705 Receiver ($610)
Fronts: Athena LS-100B (127 Shipped)
Center: Athena LSC-100B (127 Shipped)
Rears: Athena LS-50B (140 Shipped for all 6)
Sub: Bic Acoustech H-100 (250 Shipped)
Total: $1254

Bedroom 5.1 (I have 2 more rears but nowhere to put them)
Onkyo 605 Receiver ($380)
Onkyo HT-SKS540 7.1 Speaker Package ($240)
Total: $620

The 540's are a surprisingly good set for the value. The sub is admitedly underpowered, but the sound coming out of them is terrific for a bedroom. The Athena setup in the living room is clearly superior, and the BIC sub makes the Onkyo one look like a joke.
