timeshares are for people who go to seminars and get suckered into buying them for free airline tickets or some other scam.

Well it depends, some timeshares are worth it, just depends on where it is and how much you're paying for it.

They are for the poor multi-millionaires who can't buy their summer houses or jets outright.

I don't get it. They're paying $15K for just the two weeks this year, or until eternity?

If you're paying $15K/year (2 weeks), then I still don't get it. That's some huge rent. Couldn't you get a really nice hotel for $1000/night and then go on any day you want?

There are timeshare trading clubs where you can trade the 2 weeks you have in your timeshare in Cancun for 2 weeks in a timeshare in the Mediterranean, for example.

I wouldn't do it, but I know a lot of people with several and they travel all over the world staying in traded timeshares.

I would never buy a time-share.

Now they have the newest "non"timeshare products. I heard about these when I was in Kona last year. Instead of buying time at a specific property you buy points that are redeemable at any one of thousnds of properties all over the world. It blew my mind to sso how much you could spend and how little you could get for it.

My vacations are usually in Maui. After hitting the Island as many times as I have I know how to get the deals on the good spots. Thanks to the internet time-shares are an even worse value than they ever were. You can score better deals on hotels and airfare anywhere now.

+ maintenance fees / year which will rise as the property gets older. It is a huge ripoff as you can probably do a lot better staying at an expensive hotel. Buying from a secondary market at 20-30% of that price on ebay, etc if they really really want a timeshare. I doubt they do though and probably got scammed into one. The only possible maybe would be the timeshares offered by Marriot which you can select 2 weeks at any of their properties - even then I would buy at the secondary market.

I think all you need to know about timeshares is that, as chowderhead pointed out, you can buy them all day long at a fraction of the price they originally sold for. If they were such a great deal - or even an OK deal - that wouldn't be the case.

We paid $8k for ours.

You can do well if you know what you are doing when purchasing timeshares.
