mine only cost $100, but i spent an extra $100 on supplies and a crate. today i just spent another $100 at the vet for the last of her shots, worm preventative, and flea preventative.

only expect to spend ~$250 total. oh well.

Our dog originally cost about $60 at the city pound; most of that money was refunded to us once we had her spayed. We've had her about 4 years, and I have no doubt that we have spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars on her. That includes food, shots, toys, vet bills, medicines (including flea medicine), kennel stays, dog houses (she chewed up her first one), blankets, etc.

But in the long run, she's been a great addition to our family, and the money was worth it. After all, you can't take it with you, so you might as well spend it on good things.

I currently have 5 dogs ranging age from 2 to 14 years. Food, Vet, meds, beds, toys, chewies... I can't even imagine how much has been spent on them.
Initial costs:
Great Dane - $1200 from breeder
Greyhound - $50 donation
Lab/mutt #1 - $85 donation (it was my neighbors dog that got picked up by animal control) She was heartworm + and needed lots of extra care.
Lab/mutt #2 - free - he showed up on my front porch one morning as a ~8 week old pup.
Pointer/mutt - $100 donation

The greyhound went through a hep treatment that included a liver biopsy and lots of meds $$$
The Great Dane survived gastric torsion thanks to an emergency surgery clinic $$$$
"De-gloved" paws, snake bites, teeth cleanings, various cuts & scrapes... the vets love to see me coming in the door : ) I try not to think about it too much. I could have had a nice fishing boat by now.

Initial cost: Don't remember, $100 or so from humane society
1st Week cost: $2000 after vet bills from domino effect of getting her treated for this causing that
1st Year: fortunately, not that much more, probably $200 or so more
every year since: probably $2-300/yr in vet bills for this and that.
Other Costs: Dunno, don't keep track, but probably more than I want to know.

Don't get a pet if you can't afford to take care of 'em. :)

Spent $500 for our golden retriever from a breeder. Tack on another $600-$700 for vet bills (all shots, spaying, removal of head tumor). Numerous hundreds of dollars on food, toys, crate, etc... Sad thing is, she's not even 5 months old yet.

I had an Irish Wolfhound that cost $1200, plus all shots, loss of nutters, tail surgery. He only lived 7 years or so, but what a great dog........weighing in at 260lbs.
