how much did you pay for your car?

we're planning on buying two cars: a used truck for my dad and a car (sedan) for me (could be used or old..we're not sure yet...and it's most likely to be a toyota).

how much did you pay for your car or cars (I only want the price you paid the salesperson, excluding insurance, taxes, titling, etc) and how much was the sticker price?

yes, I know the real comparison should be between the price you pay for your car and the invoice price but I'm not sure everybody would know the invoice price of their car. and please, this isn't a time to compare dick sizes (i.e. who is the better negotiator)..I would like to get an *honest* response to see how low people can negotiate.

i paid $4500 for my 1996 Dodge Neon in 1998. It had 20,000 miles on it and its blue book is still above what i paid. Thank god my dad works at DC, the Marshalling Center rocks!

It's really hard to say on used cars simply because you don't know what the dealer gave for the vehicle. In the new market, you pretty much know down to a &quot;T&quot; what the invoice is including all the options. You can go into a dealer looking at a new vehicle and say this is what you paid for it, and this is what I'll give you.

But, that's not the case in the used market. Some dealers might give you 10,000 for a car in trade in, and then mark it up to 12,000. Other dealers might give you 8,000 for that same car and then mark it up to 10,000. You can look up the blue book and NADA for the vehicle, adjust for condition, and then get a roundabout idea of what the dealer *could* have offered for the vehicle. Once you see what wholesale value of the car, look at the difference between the wholesale and what the dealer is offering. It could be anywhere from $500 to $5000 depending upon the vehicle. If you want to play hardball, offer 10% over wholesale for the car. The dealer will either counter offer or tell you to ah heck off. If it's an older car that's been sitting on the lot for a while, and isn't in great demand, they just might take you up on it to get it off their hands.

it depends on the market and value of the car.

used: never buy from a dealer. period.
new: depends on how &quot;hot&quot; the market is for the vehicle.

ie. bmw, expect to pay full sticker price on the hot models. maybe on top of that. and expect to wait.

ford, hynundai, etc: not much demand, leads to lots of dealer incentives, etc.

Actually auto trans is standard,manual 6 speed is 815$ option.This one is fully loaded except for the kitchen sink.Dealer would only knock 1000$ off MSRP as it was custom ordered.
