Also, don't forget how when the retailers were screaming that shoplifting was killing them and claimed it was responsible for over half of like $80 billion in merchandise they couldn't account for, only for them to get called out and shoplifting was not even 10% of that.

Don't forget, for some places like Walmart, thefts and damaged products come out of employee bonuses (unless that changed from when I worked there).

Edit: ah, looks like Walmart at least scrapped bonuses entirely, so I guess they're off the hook for that specific behavior now.
